One of Exeter’s longest-standing and most renowned restaurants, The Conservatory building dates back to 1600, and boasts an original, restored Tudor panel wall in the dining room. The menu fuses using classic English cuisine with an innovative Mediterranean influence, resulting in imaginative, modern European fare.
Seared scallops with blood orange and bok choi and Cornish crab arancini with apple salsa exemplify the restaurant’s quirky take on favourite dishes. Hearty dishes such as braised blade of beef with swede and smoked cheddar gratin are just as popular.
Iced peanut butter parfait with dark chocolate ganache and banana curd is a must-try dessert on The Conservatory menu. Early bird and express lunch menus are readily available, alongside a substantial wine list. Award-winning, local organic ales can also be sipped alongside the food.
True to its name, The Conservatory in Exeter boasts light and airy surroundings, creating a bright, relaxed setting. With Exeter Cathedral on its doorstep, The Conservatory is found just a 6-minute walk away from Exeter Train Station.

Booking was simple and easy using the restaurants on line booking system. The welcome was smiling and friendly and we were immediately seated on a nice spotlessly clean table. Complimentary water and bread and olives is always a nice touch. Arrived in time for the two courses for £17.95 and this is excellent value. GIn cured Trout and Pasta dish were our two starters.(Faultless) Blade of beef and herb crusted plaice were our mains. (Faultless) Excellent NZ Sauvingnon Blanc at a reasonable price. Puddings excellent but partner struggled with cheesecake purely because of the amount of food he had eaten in the starter and main. Staff checked on things at the right time and in a friendly manner. They are excellent. Feel very comfortable here and the prices are excellent in view of the high standard of cuisine. The chef clearly has ride in their work and this seems to be transferred to the staff.

We had not been to the Consevatory for quite a few years, perhaps we had just forgot about how good it was, so when we visited Exeter we decided to book a return. We went for dinner where the welcome and service was friendly, attentive and excellent overall, just how we remembered. The broccoli pasta starter was delicious and our hake main course was presented perfectly and very enjoyable. We had an intimate table for two and whilst the staff were attentive when needed they were not at all intrusive. Prices were just about right and so we thought good value. An excellent evening in an excellent restaurant and we will definitely return.

The starters of smoked trout, the crab crumpet and the scallops and pork belly were absolutely delicious. So was the special - hake for main course. Wine was beautiful. Correct temp. The pudding was slightly disappointing - cherry bakewell tart with clotted cream ice cream. It did not taste of almonds! It needed more almond essence! Overall an excellent place to dine. The chef certainly has a lot of talent. Great flavour combinations and excellent presentation on the plate.

A small and quirky layout in the restaurant gives an intimate feel. The service was friendly and professional: a bottle of water arrived immediately and as soon as we ordered, complementary bread and olives were served which were very welcome. My son declared the lamb to be the most tender he had eaten and the plaice and cod dishes were delicious with a generous side of fresh vegetables included. Good to see local wines on the menu. Deserts were superb and generously portioned. Overall an excellent experience for a birthday treat. The bill was very reasonable given the quality of the food partly because the wines were not outrageously priced.
