Formerly a charming farmhouse, and still a proud listed building, The Chequers – Stevenage exemplifies classic British pub cuisine in a pretty rural location. A sense of cosiness imbues The Chequers, through its log-fire inside and the lush encirclement of trees around the building and beer garden outside.
Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Chequers menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Chequers ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.
Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.
The Chequers, in Bragbury End, is only 9 minutes’ drive from Stevenage Train Station.

Staff were friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately meal and service speed was poor. Menu options had run out, there were no roast potatoes, vegetables were cold, custard was cold, coffee was cold. Room was freezing, we sat in our coats and scarves. Shame because staff did all they could to make amends, were apologetic, and quickly heated up or replaced cold items and rest of meal was lovely.

Dreadful roast, won’t be returning, such a shame as it used to be very good.

Wasn't particularly good ordered soup which came out cold had to send it back then had roast beef which was ok but very fatty and the Yorkshire was overdone was like cardboard so wasn't impressed I'm afraid.
