Formerly a charming farmhouse, and still a proud listed building, The Chequers – Stevenage exemplifies classic British pub cuisine in a pretty rural location. A sense of cosiness imbues The Chequers, through its log-fire inside and the lush encirclement of trees around the building and beer garden outside.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Chequers menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Chequers ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

The Chequers, in Bragbury End, is only 9 minutes’ drive from Stevenage Train Station.

It was ok, table wasn't ready when we arrived and they rushed us out for the next booking. Food was reasonable and very cheap.

Arrived on a warm evening, table booked right next to radiator on full blast, which couldn't be altered! Asked for another table and waitress who struggled with English a bit, said she'd check. We moved to another table (most were empty anyway). Food was very disappointing for all 3 courses. I ordered prawn and lobster cocktails . . . Ha no lobster in that dish, not surprised for the price tho! Said it was in mayonnaise but it wasn't, the prawns came in a very overpowering Marie rose type sauce, couldn't eat it. Second course was a burger, no skinny fries left, no onion rings. I was served a mass produced beef burger, which I was unable to eat, gristly, and dry, no noticeable beef flavour, fat chips (I'm fussy I know, but unless they're well cooked, I can't eat them either), dessert was chocolate brownie, which came with an unannounced Irish coffee flavoured ice cream plonked on the top. Yuk, why there was no mention of this on the menu, for such a distinctive flavour ice cream. White wine was served fresh from the cellar, so not chilled and we weren't advised , we had to have a glass of ice added to cool it down (the glass was actually filthy, with visible lipstick around the top). We paid £100 for sub standard service, food and drink. No one noticed or certainly didn't mention anything about all the left over food and drink. I will definitely not go back again and don't recommend it to anyone. Reading this back, I have no idea why I paid for this terrible evening, other than we were out for my daughters birthday and didn't want to add to the appalling evening by complaining, what a fool I am.

We have visited this Pub for many years. My Parents moved to Stevenage we came across this Pub and have been regulars ever since. The atmosphere and rustic charm is fantastic. In the winter the open fire with burning logs is inviting cosy and warm
