The top end of the wine list was eye-wateringly expensive and somewhat pretentious which could make some diners feel uncomfortable. This list should ideally be
shown on a separate list. The Pinot Grigio at £25 was very pleasant. No draft later was available and £8 for less than a pinto of bottled beer was expensive.
My main course of Ox Cheek was very good. We were charged for 2 bottles of wine, a mistake I hope, this was recitified immediately: but it should not have
    happened.

We had an excellent meal. The atmosphere and staff was welcoming and felt special. We decided upon the sharing menu paired with the wine. Every course was delicious with particular favourites of the ham hock and the chickpea chips. The setting was beautiful overlooking the river and we had a fantastic time.

The service was impeccable. The restaurant is split into three areas so it felt intimate but somewhat lacking in atmosphere at the start of the evening. We had the taster menu which, on the whole, was fine but some of the combinations didn’t seem to work that well. I enjoyed the experience but I wasn’t bowled over by the food!

We’ve been regulars since we moved to Richmond 7 years ago. We also regularly pop into the bar for a drink and we absolutely love it. I was therefore gutted to visit last week after the big make over to find the bar totally ruined. What used to be luxurious elegance (think sumptuous sofas, gilt ceiling and huge mirrors) has been changed into a cafe. All hard surfaces, incredibly uncomfortable banquets/ chairs and marble topped tables that are so high it feels like sitting in a school canteen. The whole look is redolent of a national trust cafe and has created terrible acoustics. We assumed the plan was to serve food in there, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The service was also hopeless. Not something I would ever have said before (far too few staff).
The restaurant has also been done up- it’s not so bad although the plastic cane-look bistro chairs seems totally out of place.
Fortunately the food is still good although likewise the service was very slow.
Bring back the old look please....
