Service in this restaraunt was exceptional. Makes a huge difference when staff are knowledgeable about the menu.

Three of the meals we ordered (sea bream, hunter's chicken and butternut squash and mushroom) were excellent and enjoyed. I chose the sirloin steak. Big mistake. I realise the date was almost immediately prior to the site closing for 'change over', and the menu very limited to our usual choice but it was probably the chewiest meat, gristle and fat I have ever experienced. Cooked medium rare. Also, whilst one of our party is a vegetarian, another is an avid fish eater and having looked at the proposed Miller & Carter menu, carnivores appear to be well catered for but there seems to be very little choice for the other two. There are many other foods needed to satisfy the clientele at the Barn Owl other than steak.

The waiter informed us that seven items on the main menu were unavailable and at least one on the desserts menu was, too. This was for a 7.30 booking on a midweek evening when the restaurant was not packed. The main dish I ordered was adequate but not outstanding. The dish my daughter ordered, after she'd asked whether it contained mushrooms - a particular dislike of hers, did contain a small amount of mushrooms, even though they weren't mentioned on the menu. Maybe we just caught the Barn Owl on a bad night. At least the desserts we chose were good.

Our main comment would be is that they need more staff, our waitress was very friendly but too busy. The food was alright but could have been a bit warmer, the starter portabella mushrooms was lovely. I normally go there for the ambiance it has a warm cosy feeling. It is usually pot luck with the food, sometimes it is really good and other times just average.

Usually good but this time it was chaotic and there was obviously confusion about the order.

Waiter v pleasant and helpful. However the food was luke warm. The veg came out first, that was not v hot. We then had to wait for the meat platter which arrived several minutes later and again was not piping hot. It tasted v nice however. The restaurant was not busy. Also, one of my daughters had pasta and the other sausages. The pasta came in a tiny bowl, it was a v small portion in comparison to my other daughters meal. Perhaps a bigger bowl next time. Finally, call me old fashioned but mobile phones when working?!

Four of us ate. The food was of good quality and our waitress was friendly and provided good service. The barman that took our drink orders & brought over my pot of tea was, however, rather curt. As a side note, my tea pot had a saucer for a lid (when the barman brought this over no explanation/apology was given, he merely put it down & walked off). I burned myself when pouring it as the tea came out over the top & it then went cold rather quickly as a saucer isn't designed to fit a teapot.
I would have given four stars were it not for the overall attitude of the barman and the incident with the tea.
