With a stunning vaulted ceiling lined with rustic exposed beams, The Barn dates back to the 16th century, and has been lovingly converted yet retains its rural charm. Enjoy a selection of classic and modern gastro dishes, including children's menus, making this a versatile setting for the whole family.
The Barn menu spans the entire day, and starts off with all-day breakfasts and brunch options, with dishes like American-style pancakes with smoked back bacon and maple syrup. The a la carte menu includes vegan dishes like carrot and beetroot terrine with homemade bread and grape chutney, with hearty mains including whole lobster with garlic butter and skinny fries. There are generous sharing platters that are perfect for groups, and hearty burgers and steaks from the grill.
Enjoy classic afternoon teas at The Barn in Colchester, while the dessert menu features other British flavours, with choices like apple and fig crumble with cardamom and rose water ice cream. There is also a diverse wine list served, with bottles from the old and new worlds.
A beautifully picturesque rural setting, The Barn is a charming spot for all-day dining, and sits 5 minutes' drive from Marks Tey Rail Station.

Customer reviews for The Barn

The three of us greatly enjoyed our meal. My wife and I have been going to the Barn for the last 12 years. The food is excellent. The service matched it on this occasion but it has sometimes not been as good. My main grouse is being consigned to a side room due to a wedding. We ought to be told of this when booking and not a day or two before we are due to dine. We can't wait for our next visit on 4th August.

The Barn is a lovely building and creates a great ambience for a meal. My friend and I both had the lobster bisque for starter. It was lovely, full of flavour, really good. I was a bit non-plussed with the red pepper and chilli rouille though. Were you supposed to put in in the bisque or spread it on the bread? Mine also did not have any chilli heat. We both had the sea bass for mains. Again, this was beautifully cooked, moist and flavoursome. The accompanying quinoa and chickpea dome was also very tasty. We didn't have desserts but opted for coffees. The service was good and not over-bearing and there was no pressure on us to leave the table - in fact we were the last ones out.

Overall both the food and the service we received at The Barn was of excellent standard. This was our second visit this year and this hadn't changed from before.
What did change from before was that last time we had just one member of staff attending our table all evening previously whereas this time we had several members attending to us which resulted in different members coming for a order twice and asking if we wanted drinks when we'd already ordered from another member of staff and so on. I will point out non of the staff were in anyway unfriendly and did a great job but the fact so many different members of staff attended our table was at times confusing. We would have preferred just the one as we felt this was a personal touch for us last time and made us feel more valued.
The only other issue was the size of the beer glasses which amounted to just over half a pint and seemingly charged for more than the standard pint. Maybe that's something that needs to be looked at.
Otherwise, great job all round.

We booked a table to celebrate my Dads 70th birthday, thinking this was just the kind of place he would enjoy. Well ... We felt an inconvenience when we first arrived, having booked a table for 3 of us they seemed surprised that we turned up and we were taken to a table set for 2 and had to stand around uncomfortably while they set an additional place, we then sat down and one of the places you had to sit sideways because of the table leg. We thought it has to get better so sat down and looked at the menu, we waited whilst other tables seated after us were served first then our drinks order was taken, this arrived in drips and drabs and the wrong drink was brought which they promptly changed, our food order was taken and we waited and watched as other tables were served with bread, some even getting second offerings, still we waited and eventually 2 of the starters arrived, fair enough maybe they could only carry 2 plates, not a big problem, however, they then proceeded to bring out other tables food all the while my starter was getting colder, we spoke to a waiter who went to see what was happening and then 10 minutes later the 3rd dish arrived with apologies. So I then had my now cold starter and the poached egg wasn't even cooked and the white was still clear inside. We asked to let the manager know we were not happy but he never came to see us. We continued the meal, 2 of 3 mains were good and they all came out together which was a bonus I suppose. The desserts were great and it was nice not to be rushed out at the end of the meal, however, we were left disappointed and that our custom was not wanted, needless to say we won't be returning any time soon.

Overall a nice experience but this is the 3rd occasion that we have been ignored when arriving by the barman to have drinks. We sat for some time & eventually my husband went to the bar. Meanwhile a larger party of women who came in after us were dealt with. We then waited a good 10 minutes & eventually the head waiter noticed & asked if we had had our drinks. When we said no he went to the bar & there sat our orders all poured out & just left because the barman was more interested in sorting out this group of women. The staff seemed keen to get us to our table but once we did we waited over 15 minutes for our starter & we eventually had to ask where it was.

Disappointing meal. Food mediocre. Service poor. Poor value. Bread stale. Took ages to find any gluten free bread. 3 Glasses of champagne served warm in wrong glasses. 3 more glasses served chilled and in champagne flutes but one glass of champagne was flat and had to go back again. Main meals mediocre and tiny portions with virtually no veg. An extra portion of vegetables was ordered at outset but never appearred. Risotto was overcooked, stodgy, tasteless and inedible. The veg curry was likewise tasteless. Nobody came to our table to ask whether our main meals were ok. It is difficult to find anything to recommend about this restaurant except perhaps that parking was not a difficulty. We will not be returning.
