4 of us ate here for mid day dinner. The ambience is unique, the Service first class, the food was as good as you can get, the wine was very good. All in all a most enjoyable meal.

Enjoy a selection of classic and modern gastro dishes, including children's menus, making this a versatile setting for the whole family.

The Barn menu spans the entire day, and starts off with all-day breakfasts and brunch options, with dishes like American-style pancakes with smoked back bacon and maple syrup. The a la carte menu includes vegan dishes like carrot and beetroot terrine with homemade bread and grape chutney, with hearty mains including whole lobster with garlic butter and skinny fries. There are generous sharing platters that are perfect for groups, and hearty burgers and steaks from the grill.

Enjoy classic afternoon teas at The Barn in Colchester, while the dessert menu features other British flavours, with choices like apple and fig crumble with cardamom and rose water ice cream. There is also a diverse wine list served, with bottles from the old and new worlds.

I am afraid me and my girlfriend's experiences of this restaurant were mostly negative. The positives were the polite waiters and the beautiful venue itself. The negatives were A: Overcooked, rubbery half-lobster main, a small portion more like a starter we felt was not reasonable value. Also the manager came over when we voiced our concerns to the waiter, when they asked if everything was okay with the meals, about the overcooked and small lobster portion and although he tried to address our concerns he actually did not, we did not try to get a refund or replacement and he kept trying to tell us that we could not do so, even though we were not asking for one at all and had not called the manager over in the first place. B: As well as this he actually said to us that we should have not raised a complaint and sent back the dish straight away, we had not complained in the sense that we had just simply given simple feedback as asked by the waiter. My girlfriend did not finish the dish, she said it was too rubbery. C: The service was very slow, outside of reason and then we were told a large part of the menu ie the specials of the day were sold out, after waiting so long I had to quickly rethink my order to an available option from the limited remainder of the menu. D: The spacial layout was very noisy, each smaller table with around two chairs was near each larger group table, this is not good when you want to talk without significantly raising your voice. Our table was so crammed in that my chair was at a ninety degrees angle to my girlfriend's and we had to talk to one another and have our meal and drinks crammed to the edges of the small table, it would have been more roomy otherwise. It was so crammed in that a waiter caught their leg on my girlfriend's chair and this actually hurt my girlfriend a little, although the waiter did apologize we felt it was not her fault given that the layout was set out as such. Soft furnishings would vastly improve acoustics.

Excellent atmosphere, as usual. Nice to find 'Sunday Roasts' on the menu as 'Specials'. I didn't expect that, as there doesn't appear to be any mention of traditional roasts on the website, maybe that should get a mention, even if they are not always available. Food was great, just had to ask for a bit more gravy for that lovely roast.

Love the setting and ambience of the barn and very good value for money. My only niggle is that although my roast pork Sunday lunch was very tasty it lacked more heat and gravy, the plates were barely warm and the whole meal should have been hotter, bur apart from that it was another pleasant visit. Also it’s a shame that they only do bottled beer.

It was a very pleasant dining experience. The staff were very attentive and helpful. My friend and i both enjoyed the food very much. I thought the choice of starters on the mkd week menu, 2 courses for 15 were rather uninspiring and not varied enough. It was not a problem though as we chose to have a main course and desserts whihc were more varied. I loved the pianist playing in the background, that was really lovely.

Lovely venue and very pleasant staff. Food was very good, however, I would have liked a bit more in the way of vegetables. I had the pan roasted chicken with pressed potato and broccoli stems. For dessert I had the Black Forest cheesecake which I was extremely disappointed with. Too many hard pieces in it! Also, a very hard biscuit base. I had to leave about half of it which was a shame.

Very pleasurable evening. Staff attentive. The sharing platters were pa good start. The smoked mackerel dish was good and the problem with it dealt with smoothly. All the mains were well presented and substantial. Great choice of ice cream and sorbets. It was great to have the pianist and the break kept it nice and relaxed.

My wife and I had a lovely pre-Christmas lunch. The food was delicious, and the service excellent. Just the experience we were looking for during all the stress of Christmas
