Lovely atmosphere and excellent food. The children’s menu was exceptional. Very much enjoyed the pianist.

    Excellent food and service.

The dining experience for me was very disappointing. The menu on NYE had a chance to deliver but was let down on a number of elements for me.
Oyster soup, nice but lacked seasoning and a good sized Oyster
Sweetbread was chewy and not very appertising
Monk fish, the sauce was delicious and packed a great favour, however the fish was over cooked
Beef brisket was melt in the mouth, unfortunately the ratio of fat to meat was about the same. Potato purée was amazing as was the sauce
    Dessert was ok.
On the service side there did not appear to be enough serving staff on and I had to fill my own class of wine on a number of occasions.
The wine list was good and we had a great bottle of Te Whare.
Very expensive overall, Mitchelin star prices which I don’t mind paying if the food is of the standard

Disappointing.Despite excellent presentation of the five course NYE dinner only the Oyster first course and Monkfish delivered on flavour.Sweetbread was unappetisingly chewy with a sauce that confusingly tasted of baked beans. My beef contained an inedible strip of gristle and dessert consisted of a combination of tastes too bland and over sharp to be enjoyable. Not a pleasantly memorable visit.

This was our 8/9 visit and we noticed a distinct reduction in the portions served. We asked the Maitre Di and he informed us it was an instruction from Mr Birchall co owner. For example the portion of Hake was 8 x 4 x1 cms, more in keeping with the taster menu in Moor Hall restaurant.
    We would welcome your comments.

The portions were small. Would have been nice to have bread with the terrine and more veg with the main course.
Service was poor - plenty of staff stood around not very attentive.

This is the second time of dining at The Barn at lunchtime. The food was exceptional however the service was off the pace I felt and I twice had to request clean forks as the one set on the table was not clean and this was replaced with another unclean fork.

We eat here all the time. On Wednesday the staff were terrible, young, inexperienced and frankly could not care less. Even the Head Waiter left us to pour our own wine and the restaurant was two thirds empty. Starters were cold, main courses took one hour from the starters arriving and the chefs were stood around not preparing food!
I did not want to write a bad review, but the whole experience was terrible. What makes matters worse is that we paid the bill in full, including service charge as we had a guest with us and did not want to make a fuss. I wrote directly to the restaurant the following day - no response !

The main restaurant is great, the Barn need to get their act together.
