We arrive a little early but table was ready. Service very attentive once it got started - we waited about 5 mins before we were spoken to. Menu explained and we were asked about allergies/preferences. We waited about 20 mins before the tea was served. Our food was served on wooden platters - and all other diners were served theirs on cake stands. When asked it was explained that this was because my partner had an allergy to one of the savoury dishes and therefore the 'tea' was served separately for each diner to avoid contamination. Personally I think a wooden board is not really suitable and a china/glass plate would have looked better. Would have liked to take a photo but the wooden platter did not look that great. I noticed at the end that they took the cost of the glass of wine I had off the bill which I was pleased with although I would not have expected it.
Food was very nice, however 5 selections of cake was too many for us and we both left 3. Perhaps one more savoury and 3 sweet would be better. Having said that the table along side cleared the lot. I am sure that if we had asked we would have been given a top up of hot drink however we were not approached. Also I think for afternoon tea in a hotel it would have been nice to have a table cloth on the table.
Overall we were pleased with the experience and would recommend.

we stayed at the angel from the 24/11 until 26/11. we ate in resturant both nights. The menu was the same for both nights .I was hoping for a sunday roast on the sunday however this was only available sunday lunch time. I am a ceoliac which means i have to have gluten free . so i was rather dispointed with menu choice had the beefburger without a bun i know you can get gluten free buns no chips had new pots.not quite the same.had belly of pork told them i could not have the black pudding it came with blackpudding and i was told it was gluten free. i know it is not then the waiter came back a few minutes later saying the blackpudding is not gluten free. I feel you need to know as the recent press with people with allergic reaction to food etc.I would have bad stomach if i ate something with gluten in as my body cannot tolerate the gluten.

Unfortunately the steak was very sinewy and almost inedible. We had been given vouchers for lunch so was really looking forward to the meal. Had we paid for the lunch ourselves I would have asked for meal to be deducted from bill. Rest of lunch was nice. Salt beef starter in particular was good. Service was fine though the waiter was a little cold. Perhaps it's because it was lunch time service. We mainly dine out in the evening. Obviously the angel is a beautiful building in a lovely town so that I cannot fault.

Average at best, dining room layout amateur and food was uninspiring.

The beef on sourdough starter was excellent. Service of food was fast but to take payment surprisingly slow.
