Praised by renowned critics Giles Coren and Jay Rayner, Thackeray’s Tunbridge Wells serves fine French food in the former home of the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. Built in the traditional Kentish style, the 17th-century building provides a unique setting for the flavour-packed modern French menu.
Created by head chef Richard Phillips, the Thackeray’s menu changes regularly to offer local and seasonal ingredients at their best. With each dish exquisitely presented, expect the likes of pot roasted mallard duck with a reduced sherry glaze, or the rich roasted loin of venison with sautéed foie gras, potato fondant, butternut squash, honey-glazed parsnip and a dark chocolate and juniper jus.
Desserts at Thackeray’s restaurant are every bit as imaginative. Savour the bitter chocolate and clementine jaffa cake with clementine gel and poached kumquats, or the Italian lime torte with lemongrass and black pepper crumble, lime leaf syrup, almond sponge and bay leaf ice cream.
Boasting a Japanese terrace for al fresco dining, Thackeray’s Kent offers fine dining in a historic tranquil setting. Tunbridge Wells town centre is a short walk away.

We were there to celebrate our wedding anniversary Sunday lunch time.
Restaurant ambience good, although our table for two was very cramped by a wall, and the second room was, I think, not being used at all.
Staff very welcoming and attentive, although we had to wait a while for the menu and to order.
Unfortunately one staff member had a personal hygiene problem which was not pleasant.
I found my starter to be very small (I had the Orkney Scallops), and we both found the beef main course rather tasteless, albeit tender.

Have been here several times now and every visit has been fabulous - food, service, ambience, everything. We have tried a la carte, tasting menus and lunch deals. This time we had the £20 three course lunch - four choices for each course but still something for everyone - and each dish was of the same similar very high quality. Lots of different colours, textures, tastes that all compliment each other and portions are not skimped either. We allowed the restaurant to choose the wines to go with our dishes and these were just right as well. Highly recommended.

The food was on the whole very good. They should advise diners when a steak dish is served very rare. The option should be given to have it pink - otherwise the dish may be sent back. Otherwise excellent.

Very classy without being starchy. Very relaxed and friendly. Outstanding food. Excellent service.

The food, service and ambience was as good as ever. We chose the three course lunch which was very good value. However, I was very disappointed that the restaurant does not take American Express. That is how I wished to pay and I am not happy the restaurant didn't give me that choice. They don't dictate to me what I should eat, so why dictate to me how I can pay ?

We always enjoy our visits to Thackerays. Booking is easy, Reception immaculate and service very high class indeed, especially considering that Sunday lunch is a busy time for you. For once, we do have a minor request. The two of us who chose the lamb felt that it might have been just a little less 'bleu'. We would have liked the fat crisped up a bit. The quail were wonderful and so were the puddings. The event was for my godson's 40th birthday and I know he felt appropriately rewarded.
