Praised by renowned critics Giles Coren and Jay Rayner, Thackeray’s Tunbridge Wells serves fine French food in the former home of the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. Built in the traditional Kentish style, the 17th-century building provides a unique setting for the flavour-packed modern French menu.

Created by head chef Richard Phillips, the Thackeray’s menu changes regularly to offer local and seasonal ingredients at their best. With each dish exquisitely presented, expect the likes of pot roasted mallard duck with a reduced sherry glaze, or the rich roasted loin of venison with sautéed foie gras, potato fondant, butternut squash, honey-glazed parsnip and a dark chocolate and juniper jus.

Desserts at Thackeray’s restaurant are every bit as imaginative. Savour the bitter chocolate and clementine jaffa cake with clementine gel and poached kumquats, or the Italian lime torte with lemongrass and black pepper crumble, lime leaf syrup, almond sponge and bay leaf ice cream.

Boasting a Japanese terrace for al fresco dining, Thackeray’s Kent offers fine dining in a historic tranquil setting. Tunbridge Wells town centre is a short walk away.

Booked as a little pilgrimage for food.
You get the feeling that this venue really wants a Michelin star.
Lots of nice touches seeking to hit that quality, my impression is....not quite there.
Staff were attentive and interested but not overly communicative it felt.
We were served with butter first then the bread, but the butter was so chilled it was impossible to spread on the bread without breaking the bread up.
The amuse bouche was delicious as were indeed all the courses, well presented, prepared and flavoured loads of customers were clearly regulars, the maitre seemed to greet them all likeold friends, I must admit I felt a bit marginalised.
At the end I tried to engage him in a short conversation to feedback on my experience, but felt he didn't seem interested
Overall nice meal, good food cleanish toilets reasonable staff.
    Saturday lunchtime worth booking

The food was incredible, definetly would recommend the tasting menu. The staff were very friendly and attentive, we aren't that good with wine choosing but the man behind bar (believe his names Gary) asked what kind we were after and picked an exceptional Israeli one. It is worth the bit extra you pay, lovely evening and will definetly be returning to try the other dishes!

We opted for the Sunday three-course tasting menu which was good value at just over £35 and quite simply delicious. We also received a complimentary amuse bouche which was delightful and yummy homemade bread; coupled with an aperitif from a good range - a good way to start a Sunday!
