Praised by renowned critics Giles Coren and Jay Rayner, Thackeray’s Tunbridge Wells serves fine French food in the former home of the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. Built in the traditional Kentish style, the 17th-century building provides a unique setting for the flavour-packed modern French menu.
Created by head chef Richard Phillips, the Thackeray’s menu changes regularly to offer local and seasonal ingredients at their best. With each dish exquisitely presented, expect the likes of pot roasted mallard duck with a reduced sherry glaze, or the rich roasted loin of venison with sautéed foie gras, potato fondant, butternut squash, honey-glazed parsnip and a dark chocolate and juniper jus.
Desserts at Thackeray’s restaurant are every bit as imaginative. Savour the bitter chocolate and clementine jaffa cake with clementine gel and poached kumquats, or the Italian lime torte with lemongrass and black pepper crumble, lime leaf syrup, almond sponge and bay leaf ice cream.
Boasting a Japanese terrace for al fresco dining, Thackeray’s Kent offers fine dining in a historic tranquil setting. Tunbridge Wells town centre is a short walk away.

Superb meal as always. Service was excellent and the meal was sublime. Such lovely touches with extras thrown in. Excellent bottle of Rioja. Could not fault a thing.

paid 171£ for 2 for a 30£ 3-course meal with 43£ wine. Wine was good but the food was ok. Will pay 70-80£ for everything but definitely not worth 171£. Been to many Michelin starred restaurants so not an amateur.

Very tentative waiting service and extremely friendly. Made a special request for an anniversary and it was catered to wonderfully. Brilliant food, easy booking and great service.

Lovely and friendly service. Very accommodating for the vegetarian diner... We chose the wine pairing option and they choices were varied and of a high quality. Very pleased with the night out.

I know this restaurant held a Michelin star, lost it and are now hoping to regain the same. Unfortunately the food is just not good enough from the unimaginative smoked salmon starter to the overcooked halibut served on a cold plate with a miscellaneous variety of vegetable pieces. The dessert was supposed to be a clafoutis and turned out to be a small almond sponge topped by a small section of overcooked plum.

Excellent food and good wines. Service very good. Only one problem. We dined outside and the canvas canopy was very dirty being covered in old vegetation. Surely it must be possible to clean it?

We had a lovely meal to celebrate our daughter's birthday. Food and service were great.
