Praised by renowned critics Giles Coren and Jay Rayner, Thackeray’s Tunbridge Wells serves fine French food in the former home of the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray. Built in the traditional Kentish style, the 17th-century building provides a unique setting for the flavour-packed modern French menu.
Created by head chef Richard Phillips, the Thackeray’s menu changes regularly to offer local and seasonal ingredients at their best. With each dish exquisitely presented, expect the likes of pot roasted mallard duck with a reduced sherry glaze, or the rich roasted loin of venison with sautéed foie gras, potato fondant, butternut squash, honey-glazed parsnip and a dark chocolate and juniper jus.
Desserts at Thackeray’s restaurant are every bit as imaginative. Savour the bitter chocolate and clementine jaffa cake with clementine gel and poached kumquats, or the Italian lime torte with lemongrass and black pepper crumble, lime leaf syrup, almond sponge and bay leaf ice cream.
Boasting a Japanese terrace for al fresco dining, Thackeray’s Kent offers fine dining in a historic tranquil setting. Tunbridge Wells town centre is a short walk away.

Customer reviews for Thackeray's

We enjoyed an excellent lunch with friends, at Thackeray’s on Wednesday. We really could not find fault at any level. The food was exceptionally good with super wine pairings, the setting was lovely and we all felt it was excellent value for money. We all had the ham hock Terrine to start which was delicious, the halibut was probably the best I have ever eaten and our friends said the same about the venison. Most amazing was the apricot soufflé. Stunning!

Superb venue, service and finest food.

Food and service was outstanding. One minor thing, a waiter accidentally spilt some wine on my friend, a few splashes on a dark coloured jumper so no lasting damage. However a gesture such as a complimentary drink or more heartfelt apology wouldn't have gone amiss.

The overall ambience and service was excellent. The food was excellently served and presented to appeal both to the eye as well as to the taste buds. The starter smoked chicken was outstanding as was the baked apricot soufflé. An excellent and balanced wine list to appeal to all tastes and pockets. All in all, an excellent venue in which to celebrate my 79th birthday.

We have had several meals over several years including private dinners, business meals, and celebratory dinners and lunches. All have been excellent experiences and the latest one was to celebrate my wife birthday with their mid week special lunch menu and it didn't disappoint.

Great food. The best meal we have had in as long as we can remember. Loved the tomato jelly and wasabi mouse. My wife loved the desert souffle.
