Exuding the lavish sophistication that Harrods is famous for, Tartufi & Friends place the truffle at the heart of everything they do. The Italian delicacy is creatively used in a both sweet and savoury dishes to create an innovative, flavour-rich menu. On the lower ground floor alongside the wine shop, the restaurant sits inside the iconic department store, and showcases the building's signature style.

On arrival, service was attentive but we were offered a table in a 2 x 2 "cubicle", one table already occupied and only 2 feet from the other. Nearly all the other tables were empty so we asked to be seated away from the existing diners. Aperitifs were offered but there was no choice of sparkling waters, one only available in small bottles. We chose tap water rather than several small bottles. One champagne arrived as requested which had very little fizz but was exchanged on request, with the comment that the bottle had been half full. There was no mention of how long the bottle had been open.
Lobster salad as a starter was unimaginative and disappointing, the tagliolini was pretty good. As pointed out on ordering a rare steak, the cut was thin, so it was suggested that medium rare would be more appropriate. It did not seem possible to increase the heat to caramelise the outside but leave the inside rare. The burger was dry with nothing to bind it together and the foie gras was over-cooked, the chips were very pale and certainly not crisp with the suggestion of having been kept warm for ages.
Service continued to be good throughout the meal but the restaurant was not busy, so it was not tested properly.
All in all this was a very disappointing experience, having looked forward to the use use of truffles in the cooking. The truffle was only added as a topping of shavings rather than clever use in the preparation of the courses. I could have done that myself.
