Restaurant description

A funky blend of casual cafe and modern restaurant, Spoon in Edinburgh Old Town draws diners in with its inventive menu of Scottish and European recipes, freshly made cakes, and simple style.

Wholesome, healthy recipes feature throughout the Spoon menu, with plenty of gluten-free and dairy-free options. Regional flavours are showcased in dishes like Scottish asparagus with lemon and chilli mash and romesco sauce, and there are fresh seafood options such as chargrilled herring fillet with fennel, watercress and lemon. Exotic tastes from overseas can be found in dishes like the saag aloo with coriander and lime yoghurt, while the sides range from patatas bravas to a selection of Scottish cheeses.

There are a great selection of freshly made cakes to enjoy throughout the day at Spoon Edinburgh, while the concise wine list includes bottles from the old and new worlds. Brunch is also a popular option here, with crowd pleasing choices ranging from rolls with sausage, egg and black pudding, through to toasted waffles with bacon, blueberries and maple syrup.

Moments from the Festival Theatre Edinburgh, Spoon offers pre-theatre menus, while Edinburgh Waverley Rail Station is only 10 minutes' walk away.

Lovely, chilled out dinner. Staff were excellent about my million allergies and didn’t make me feel like a freak which is always a pleasant surprise when eating out. Thanks Spoon.

Restaurant was very nice. Service was excellent including offering advice and samples of wine to choose from. Food was excellent, and sped up when we were running out of time before the theatre performance. Excellent overall. Would definitely recommend and revisit.

Have been here a few times as it is convenient for festival theatre. Service always good and friendly. Portion sizes vary greatly peat smoked haddock was over cooked and small one day, whilst a few days later a antipasti starter I had as a main course ample. My husband's mushroom risotto looked like grey gloop with a large lump of goat's cheese on top. The presentation could be better. Having said all that food it very tasty and that is what counts.
