Lovely food, lovely staff, perfect situation for pre-theatre at the Festival Theatre, but lovely for a relaxed meal anytime ??

A funky blend of casual cafe and modern restaurant, Spoon in Edinburgh Old Town draws diners in with its inventive menu of Scottish and European recipes, freshly made cakes, and simple style.

Wholesome, healthy recipes feature throughout the Spoon menu, with plenty of gluten-free and dairy-free options. Regional flavours are showcased in dishes like Scottish asparagus with lemon and chilli mash and romesco sauce, and there are fresh seafood options such as chargrilled herring fillet with fennel, watercress and lemon. Exotic tastes from overseas can be found in dishes like the saag aloo with coriander and lime yoghurt, while the sides range from patatas bravas to a selection of Scottish cheeses.

There are a great selection of freshly made cakes to enjoy throughout the day at Spoon Edinburgh, while the concise wine list includes bottles from the old and new worlds. Brunch is also a popular option here, with crowd pleasing choices ranging from rolls with sausage, egg and black pudding, through to toasted waffles with bacon, blueberries and maple syrup.

Moments from the Festival Theatre Edinburgh, Spoon offers pre-theatre menus, while Edinburgh Waverley Rail Station is only 10 minutes' walk away.

Good filling took a bit long but it's Edinburgh in the festival so expected. Staff were great and my friends who hadnt been before would go again.

Spoon is a different cafe/bistro with an eclectic mix of furniture & nick-nacks housed in a spacious upstairs room, separated into different areas by curtains & pieces of furniture. It has an easy-going ambience and the staff are all very friendly. We enjoyed 2 courses from a varied menu filled with interesting dishes, and were served tasty food well cooked, along with beer and wine. All in all we had a very enjoyable meal before going to the Festival Theatre across the road.

Food was lovely, although service was slow, we waited more than 20mins for order to be taken. We had booked a table so expected to be servered quicker. Order came fairly quickly once it was taken, but as we were going to theatre we had little time at end of meal for coffee etc, and decided not to have any. It was fairly noisy due to a large table, so we asked to be moved to another table this was done, but that may have led to us being forgotten, as I had to ask waiting staff to take our order and they went to another table instead of ours, resulting in my asking again.

Excellent simple tasty food, not fussed with and letting the ingredients talk for themselves. Friendly helpful and efficient staff, quirky decor with s lovely open feel. Well priced and good value- house wine only £16 a bottle. Loved it

THE best place for a quick and delicious and affordable bite to eat before Festival Theatre events. Always friendly, fun and fast. Molly behind the bar is so quick with drinks. And the food doesn't hang around either. Either arriving at the table, or disappearing off the plate! A great find when I first visited ?3 years ago.

Fantastic food and service - really enjoyed our dinner. The braised beef on the pre-Theatre menu was particularly nice as was the sea bream from the specials.
