Delicious food, full of flavour and variety, with a welcome feel of home cooking, as opposed to some over-produced restaurant food. Very friendly, courteous and prompt service.

A funky blend of casual cafe and modern restaurant, Spoon in Edinburgh Old Town draws diners in with its inventive menu of Scottish and European recipes, freshly made cakes, and simple style.

Wholesome, healthy recipes feature throughout the Spoon menu, with plenty of gluten-free and dairy-free options. Regional flavours are showcased in dishes like Scottish asparagus with lemon and chilli mash and romesco sauce, and there are fresh seafood options such as chargrilled herring fillet with fennel, watercress and lemon. Exotic tastes from overseas can be found in dishes like the saag aloo with coriander and lime yoghurt, while the sides range from patatas bravas to a selection of Scottish cheeses.

There are a great selection of freshly made cakes to enjoy throughout the day at Spoon Edinburgh, while the concise wine list includes bottles from the old and new worlds. Brunch is also a popular option here, with crowd pleasing choices ranging from rolls with sausage, egg and black pudding, through to toasted waffles with bacon, blueberries and maple syrup.

Moments from the Festival Theatre Edinburgh, Spoon offers pre-theatre menus, while Edinburgh Waverley Rail Station is only 10 minutes' walk away.

Relaxed surroundings, very pleasant and efficient waiting staff and very tasty food. A great pre-show meal for a group of us. A perfect start to the evening

Spoon is a firm regular favourite, however on this occasion we were served by a very rude waiter with a big beard who seemed too important to actually speak to us and who even shoulder barged one of our group on our way out without even the slightest hint of an apology. The waiter I mention is a regular staff member at Spoon and I've found him to be gruff and rude on previous occasions but not quite as bad as this visit.

The net result is that an otherwise great evening of good food and a cosy ambience is completely ruined by a grumpy, too-cool-for-school waiter who is definitely olde enough to know better. His attitude made all of the people at my table too uncomfortable to confront at the time, but I hope this review reaches the right ears at Spoon before this particular waiter ruins many more peoples experience at Spoon.

Quirky first floor bistro. Meals were tasty, service good too and they welcomed our guide dog puppy.

Had lunch with 2 friends, from standard menu not Xmas menu, and the food was really good and reasonable value.
Service was also good: a mistake was made with our coffee order, but was immediately replaced when the error was realised.

Have not eaten here in the evening before, so was not sure what it would be like. Dining with friends and family from London so wanted something a bit quirky and different. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening, food was excellent as was the wine. Service was a bit slow at times but nothing to have spoiled our enjoyment.

I love this hidden quirky restaurant and have been many times. It is in the first floor so easy to miss. Full of vintage items that remind you of your granny or great granny. Food is delicious - the chef knows about flavour combinations. Pre theatre is gorgeous are breakfasts ! Try it - sure to love it.
