A lovely meal in a very relaxed environment. Small but perfectly-formed menu. Dishes not too large, so we able to fit in four courses! Lovely selection of wines.

I came to Southernhay House to treat my partner to a Birthday dinner.
Upon arrival the restaurant seemed clean, was quiet but the staff were welcoming.
The only redeeming factor about the visit was the staff. I have a feeling they know how bad the restaurant is as they looked embarrassed when they delivered the food.
We ordered from the a la carte menu, which was slim pickings anyway. The food was expensive so we expected quality.
Much to my disappointment the potted shrimp was rubbery and bland. The cheese custard was basic to say the least.
We ordered everything in the beginning and so steak was to come next. The chips were quite clearly oven chips and we were informed there had been an 'incident' with the mushrooms so we couldn't have the sauce it was meant to come in. The ketchup was Heinz on a silver dish.
Essentially Southernhay House needs to stop pretending they are fine dining. Call a spade a spade Southernhay House.
Fine if you want bland food and oven chips then pay over £100 for the pleasure.
Poor staff, I'd be embarrassed to deliver that food to a table!

Loved the meal, menu slightly restricted but it did have fish, meat and vegetarian. Nice place, we had one issue with the music being too loud and staff quickly dealt with it. Great will come again.

The restaurant is beautiful and situated close to the cathedral, but tucked away and in a tranquil location.
We were fortunate enough to have a sunny evening so could sit on the veranda for dinner. The food was perfectly sized and balanced, and the service was friendly and perfectly timed. The lady who welcomed us (and I assume is the owner) was particularly friendly and made us feel very welcome.
Great wine selection – we picked one of "Liam"'s bottle of Sauvignon Blank and thoroughly enjoyed it!

The occasions was a surprise 21st dinner for my daughter during her exams. The restaurant team were amazingly helpful and reserved a table in the bar, met my daughter and brought her to our table with drinks ready to serve when she arrived and helped with photographs. The staff made sure our glasses were never empty which is always a good sign for me. The food was very good and the dinner service was excellent as well. Thoroughly enjoyed the evening which was helped enormously by the restaurant team.

The welcome was warm and the bar area treatise an modern. A good range of pre dinner drinks. The menu had a reasonable choice and was cooked to perfection. The service was spot on and there was a lovely open fire.
The dining room is small so there will never be a lot of you dining at one time. Then chef came out at the end of the evening to answer questions and to check you had enjoyed your food. That was a nice touch.
