Amazing food, I can't describe how delicious it was. We did the set menu 6 dishes and wine and it was the perfect amount for our group of 4. Plus the sharing element made it really fun. Atmosphere was great and service was excellent. I couldn't recommend highly enough!

From Jason Atherton, Sosharu in Clerkenwell is a Japanese izakaya-style restaurant and bar. Casual yet refined Japanese dishes are crafted from seasonal British ingredients, served in sophisticated, dimly-lit surrounds reminiscent of night-time Tokyo.

Classic sashimi, tempura and grill dishes lead the Sosharu menu. Sample the likes of chicken karaage with lemon, Asian pear and avocado salad with tofu dressing and cucumber and apple jelly, or grilled and raw salmon with sushi rice. From the grill comes grilled wagyu ribeye with ginger and garlic crisps, or grilled octopus with green chilli and yuzu zest.

Below Sosharu restaurant lies the downstairs cocktail bar 7 Tales, serving cocktails inspired by Japanese culture and philosophies. An array of sake options adds to the authentic Japanese feel, whilst a selection of world wines is also served.

An elegant blend of British and Japanese cultures and cuisines, find Sosharu London a 3-minute walk from Farringdon Station.

Surprising mediocre for such a big name. We had the set menu that was advertised as to share. It stated 6 pieces of sashimi but you really get three. When I asked what would they do if there are three people I was told that they would just give them three pieces extra. I asked why wouldn't they just advertise as 3 pieces per person and I got no coherent answer - 'Sorry about that'. You really end up with a meal for one shared by two people. Food was good but nothing great or memorable, the service was OK. Cocktail was the smallest I had ever been served and was full of ice, so much I could hardly lift the glass to drink from and there was no straw. I had to pluck the ice out with my fingers. I would not be rushing again nor would I recommend.

Extremely slow service. Arrived early so went to the bar - waited 15 minutes for the barman to acknowledge us and eventually went up to the bar to ask for a drink. Was taken upstairs to our table and given menus. Then no-one came back for 10 minutes to take an order. Had to keep asking for water, long gaps between courses. Impossible to catch anyone's eye to ask for anything. Eventually spoke to the manager who apologised and made a reduction on the bill. Food was ok - some dishes good, others disappointing, but the service was so bad that nothing would induce me to go back.

Booked a week in advance for the tasting menu and were sat on bar stools at the food preparation area for the entirety of our meal, in front of the receipt machine that noisily whirred out paper every few seconds.

As with many new eateries, Sosharu is open plan, so people's conversations echo throughout the restaurant creating an irritating din. 'Ambient' music is played over this, with the volume being cranked up unnecessarily loud at 8:30pm. I found the dim lighting to be dingy rather than atmospheric.

This is not a place that's interested in catering to older/infirm people, or those who are hard of hearing/wear hearing aids. One look at the other customers shows who they are aiming to attract: young, moneyed trend-seekers.

    The tasting menu consisted of:

Three tiny pieces of sashimi each. Very tasty.

Sunomono salad to share. Forgettable (I had forgotten it until I looked up the menu for reference).

Salmon or tuna temaki each, taco-style. Novel and enjoyable.

Chicken gyoza should have been served next, but it had obviously been forgotten as it arrived after our 'main' and before our dessert. Terrible. Unsealed, over-steamed and tasteless.

Chicken yakitori rice pot or pork tonkatsu to share. For the price, I was shocked to not get a main of my own. Sharing meant we also missed out on the variety of ordering 2 different items and trying both. Pork was tender & panko coating lovely, but the sauces were not impressive. The curry sauce was awful.

Cookie & strawberry kakigori (shaved ice mound) to share. Novel if you've never eaten in East or SE Asia, but a bland version of Malaysian ais kacang.

Despite my complaining about sharing elements of the meal, I was full at the end of it.

The service was typical of establishments of this type; obsequious but insincere. A 12.5% service charge is added to the bill.

I wouldn't recommend Sosharu unless you are on a generous expense account and pick the few good dishes it has to offer. It is poor value for money.
