Michelin Plate-awarded som saa restaurant and bar serves flavour-packed old-style Thai cuisine in a rustic former fabric warehouse on Commercial Street. The sustainably minded restaurant offers banana pulp ‘paper’ menus, and compostable straws and sticky rice bags.
som saa in Spitalfields features the signature whole-fried sea bass on the rotating menu, alongside a choice of stir fries. For an added kick, sample the grilled red-legged partridge with spicy shrimp paste or a creamy vegetarian coconut curry with lotus root and king oyster mushrooms, while rounding the meal off with a cool dessert of salted palm sugar ice cream and sesame-dusted grilled turmeric banana.
Pair dishes on the som saa menu with carefully selected cocktails including the Nang Tani, shaken with cognac, banana-infused rum, coconut tea syrup and a dash of lime. Perch at the distressed wooden shutter-lined bar and end with specially sourced loose-leaf teas.
Open late, diners can enjoy the warm industrial setting on copper pipe bar stools under vintage bulbs and in booths beneath exposed brick arches. Find som saa in London a 4-minute walk from Aldgate East Station.

Amazing food and service. We had the sharing set lunch menu which allowed us to try a lot of dishes - fantastic value and we saved a lot of money when we looked at what we’d have paid for the dishes on the a la carte menu. Turmeric banana with salted palm sugar ice cream was To. Die. For! We’ll be back to try the famous whole sea bass very soon. Absolutely one of my new favourite restaurants in London.
