Restaurant description

SKÅL Nordic Dining in Islington serves up an expertly crafted selection of authentic yet eclectic Scandinavian dishes with modern twists. Within the Grade II-listed building, watch the chefs delicately plate from an open kitchen behind the logs, piled high, to fuel the grill.

The SKÅL Nordic Dining menu offers famous starters like the ‘gravad lax’, cured salmon with hovmästarsås, pickled cucumber and wasabi. For traditional mains, try the lightly cured and roasted cod, served in a white wine cream with horseradish and pea-dill 'salsa', or venison meatball with wild mushrooms, a rich game sauce, lingonberries and pickled cucumber.

Choose a Nordic dessert to finish, such as the signature Swedish rice pudding with brandy-soaked cloudberries, cinnamon, honey and toasted almonds, or sticky chocolate cake ‘kladdkaka’, and the vegan lingonberry pavlova. SKÅL Nordic Dining restaurant features stylishly pared-back interiors with earthy wooden furnishings and simple wicker chairs.

The restaurant’s minimalist design helps sets the tranquil ambience. SKÅL Nordic Dining in London is situated an 8-minute walk from Essex Road Train Station and 9 minutes from Highbury and Islington Tube Station.

The food is delicious and although the portion sizes are small they will still fill you up. It also means there is room for dessert which was the yummy Kladddkaka in my case. Swedish staff is very friendly. We visited in February and I found the restaurant a bit cold temperature wise. The loo was freezing. Service is included in the price so I found it a bit odd to be pointed towards adding further gratuity when you pay.

This is a lovely, elegant bit very friendly restaurant. Service is fantastic and welcoming. Food was delicious the duck liver pate and the hot birch smoked salmon were beautifully judged. Decor is clean and mid-twentieth century elegant but also warm and intimate.

Superb, delicious and thoughtfully sourced food. The vegan pavlova was superb finish, to follow an exquisite roast artichoke. However the starter stole the show, with the mushroom and cheese sauce accompanying light fluffy parcels. The wine selection was similarly thoughtful but also encouraged you to try something new, with the knowledgeable staff assisting to ensure the choice complimented the meal.
