Restaurant description

There are few spots on the London landscape as striking as Searcys at The Gherkin, where HELIX restaurant and IRIS bar are open to the public for the first time. A proud celebration of British produce in one of London’s finest landmarks, the menus put seasonal and local produce centre stage, all while enjoying panoramic views from the top 3 levels of one of London’s most iconic skyscrapers.

The HELIX restaurant menu is led by seasonal and local produce. Highlights include Dorset crab with grapefruit, soy and sesame, and Rhug Estate Welsh lamb with bell peppers, aubergine, courgette, pepper and pine nuts.

Perched above Helix on level 40 is Iris bar, offering 360° views an extensive cocktail menu as unique as the setting. As well as cocktails which pay homage to the city below, an exquisite selection of champagne and English sparkling wine is also served.

One of London ’s most desirable dining experiences, Helix restaurant in The Gherkin is found 5 minutes’ walk from Aldgate Tube Station.

I came here for lunch with two girlfriends and their babies. Have always wanted to go to the gherkin as it’s such an iconic building. Apparently they don’t normally allow children but made an exception as it was my birthday. To be honest I wished they hadn’t accepted my booking as whilst they tried their best to accommodate us, the venue and their facilities are not adequate for those with babies. First off, security into the building was ridiculous. We needed ID, visitors passes and had to through security scanners. One of my friends arrived early so that we could get herself and baby sorted but they wouldn’t allow her up until all the party was present. There are no baby changing facilities in the entire building! We requested two high chairs but one of them didn’t work (we could tell that it was something that they weren’t used to as the chairs were completely different to one another spot liked thrown together) and so my friend’s baby was not secure. We spent a good 20 minutes trying to fix it ourselves and also got the manager to help but he couldn’t quite work it either. She then had to go and bring back her pram so that the baby could sit in that properly. My friend was so distracted and flustered after all this that she couldn’t really enjoy the meal and this affected the rest of us too. Oh and we were sat in the corner despite being one of the earliest to arrive. I get why they do it but I’d rather they just said no because it made us feel like we were a nuisance and all the hassle and issues kinda ruined the mood. Food was nice but nothing to right home about. They did bring about a small chocolate dessert for my bday which was cute.

The view was great. The food was beautiful. The service was excellent except we felt it was a bit rushed and they wanted you out to get the next ones in. Overall it was brilliant and we probably could have asked to slow it down and asked for more time but we didnt. Git there early and they had s spare table and put us in early at the window table. Would thoroughly recommend.

We were extremely disappointed overall. The service was fine but the restaurant lacked any kind of atmosphere and the windows were very dirty which rather spoiled any ideas we had about enjoying the views! There were fruit flies interfering with our food and wine. The food was modest and overpriced. The wine was not properly measured even tho we paid for 175 ml. I challenged the waiter who said it was "about right". When we received the bill it stated "money owing" which is hardly appropriate when a proportion is for service and theoretically optional. We won't be going back!

Superb evening! All three courses were excellent (I had the crab to start then the lamb and white/dark chocolate mouse - all delicious) The service (and sommelier) was very good, attentive enough but not too much. The views of course were truly spectacular.

On Monday 9th sept my siblings and I treated our 79 year old mum to a birthday lunch at the Helix. The round table in a corner by the window felt comfortable and cosy. The food was delicious and the staff were polite, professional and pleasant. We enjoyed a 3 course meal and my mum was presented by a small slice of chocolate cake with a happy birthday message written on the plate by the young lady who served us. This was a lovely gesture by the restaurant. The whole experience was lovely except a bit at the start of our journey to Helix when we got a little lost trying to get the lifts to the restaurant. Now that I’m know how to get to 39th floor, I’m returning to Helix with my husband next week to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Can’t wait :)
