Restaurant description

Cooking southern French dishes over a wood fire, Sardine - near Old Street and Angel is led by head chef Alex Jackson, and Stevie Parle, the man behind a host of top London restaurants. An uber-cool, laidback venue, expect flavour-rich dishes using the best quality, finest ingredients.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, begin the day with the likes of ham with fried egg and lovage, pain d’epices or a wondrous breakfast cassoulet. At lunch and dinner, Sardine's menu begins with sharing snacks and rich starters like radishes, crème fraîche & bottarga, grilled radicchio, ricotta and polenta fritters, stuffed courgette flowers and grilled octopus, or potato with capers and fennel.

Enticing main dishes include the signature dish of lamb a la ficelle, cooked slowly over a custom wood grill and served with fresh borlotti beans, green beans, oregano and olives. Winter favourites include a fabulous pork chop and roasted guinea fowl with spiced squash, couscous harissa and seasoned yoghurt. As the name suggests, fish is a specialty with turbot, red mullet, mussels and hake often featuring on the menu.

Amongst the classic desserts at Sardine in London, savour seasonal delights such as grilled white peach with raspberries and brandy cream. There’s a delightful, curated French aperitif cocktail menu focusing on ‘mini’ serves and an impressive wine list to hand, which specialises in regional French and Italian bottles.

Tucked away by the canal in a quiet corner of east London, Sardine on Micawber Street is a 5-minute walk from Old Street Station or Angel station

Great meal with all courses being full of flavour, good service with friendly staff. Glad we got there early as it got very busy in a fairly small space but not uncomfortable

Excellent food. Very tasty, fresh and imaginative. Wine also great. We had a table slightly apart from others which was so helpful in terms of having a conversation. Would highly recommend.

Ok we really enjoyed this meal - not overly complicated and very, very tasty. Great venue for a family or friends meal where relaxation and good food is on the agenda. Only downside was the fact that we left smelling of the food which unfortunately happens from time to time at open kitchen restaurants. We also felt this was a well priced food offering considering the quality of what we ate. Location perhaps not the best.

Always a great experience, love how much they care. Good always excellent and interesting. I had the prix fixe, a potato, chestnut and pumpkin soup, chunky with just a little liquid, simple and delicious. Then 2 juicy merguez sausages on couscous. And shared a cheese and chocolate mousse. My mate had the rabbit stew she was delighted with. Great evening, thanks. Staff attentive and lovely.

Delightful small intimate restaurant. Excellent food, and portion size for me was perfect, possibly advise people with larger appetites to have a good starter. Service was good, friendly and efficient.

The food was amazing. We live nearby and love to bring our friends and family here. The light was brighter than usual above the wooden tables and I usually prefer then it's a bit less bright.

As always, a fantastic meal in a friendly and warm environment. We regularly attend the Grande Bouffes and this one was the bet yet! My friends and I love to meet here for some great wine, perfect service and, most of all, the delicious food. Already looking forward to the next visit!
