Cooking southern French dishes over a wood fire, Sardine - near Old Street and Angel is led by head chef Alex Jackson, and Stevie Parle, the man behind a host of top London restaurants. An uber-cool, laidback venue, expect flavour-rich dishes using the best quality, finest ingredients.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, begin the day with the likes of ham with fried egg and lovage, pain d’epices or a wondrous breakfast cassoulet. At lunch and dinner, Sardine's menu begins with sharing snacks and rich starters like radishes, crème fraîche & bottarga, grilled radicchio, ricotta and polenta fritters, stuffed courgette flowers and grilled octopus, or potato with capers and fennel.

Enticing main dishes include the signature dish of lamb a la ficelle, cooked slowly over a custom wood grill and served with fresh borlotti beans, green beans, oregano and olives. Winter favourites include a fabulous pork chop and roasted guinea fowl with spiced squash, couscous harissa and seasoned yoghurt. As the name suggests, fish is a specialty with turbot, red mullet, mussels and hake often featuring on the menu.

Amongst the classic desserts at Sardine in London, savour seasonal delights such as grilled white peach with raspberries and brandy cream. There’s a delightful, curated French aperitif cocktail menu focusing on ‘mini’ serves and an impressive wine list to hand, which specialises in regional French and Italian bottles.

Tucked away by the canal in a quiet corner of east London, Sardine on Micawber Street is a 5-minute walk from Old Street Station or Angel station

This was a second visit - for Sunday brunch this time and as enjoyable as the last. We werte tempted by the thought of cassoulet which was excellent - perfectly cooked, not too large a portion, and we had room for nougat profiteroles afterwards - not very 'breakfast-y' but irresistable. Laid back atmosphere, good food - a great local restaurant.

The service was excellent, and the atmosphere very relaxed on a Monday evening. A number of us were so keen on the sound of a starter that we asked for it as a main, which they kindly served - it was delicious! The bread was great too. We went as a small group to celebrate my birthday, and it was the perfect long, lazy evening with good wine and good company!

Excellent little restaurant, lovely staff. All round, a very good dining experience. We ate at 6.30 which meant that we could opt for the prix fixe menu (available until 7pm). We chose prix fixe for starter and main then went on to the a la carte for dessert. For London, this is outstandingly good value, bearing in mind the quality of the food. Possibly the best Toulouse sausage I've ever eaten.

Absolutely delicious. Particularly the onglet and shoestring fries. The brown butter rhubarb tart though is a must !
