London’s oldest restaurant, Rules has provided the capital with traditional British food since 1798. Timelessly elegant, its illustrious history has seen the likes of Charles Dickens and H.G Wells sample the hearty menu.

As authentic as ever, the Rules menu is led by wild game and classic British dishes. Whole roast grouse and loin of venison highlight the rich variety of meats on offer, topped off by rabbit hotpot, and wild boar and mushroom pie. Dishes don’t come much more British than the rump of Lake District lamb with haggis bubble and squeak, or steamed steak and kidney suet pudding, whilst the likes of pheasant curry with basmati rice, and Loch Duart salmon with mussels and garam masala, add exotic touches to authentic cuisine.

Historic prints adorning the walls, the extravagance of the restaurant’s décor led poet John Betjeman to describe it as ‘unique and irreplaceable, and part of literary and theatrical London.’ Upstairs, the Rules cocktail bar with its glamorous menu and plush red seating, epitomises the old-fashioned elegance of the entire building.

In contrast to the bustle of neighbouring Covent Garden, the age-old sophistication of Rules restaurant London is a 6-minute walk from both Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations.

Everyone of the four of us had a splendid time, the starters were exceptional, two of us had the Dorset crab, the flavour combinations were superb. I then went for the Turbot. Although the portion size and lack of accomliments were a slight negative, I like to have a large selection of vegetables with my meal, overall we all had a great time and will be back.

Booking service excellent, all members of the staff very attentive, been here once before ans still get the same feeling of excellence in all aspects o the restaurant. My favourite dish again was the "Steak & Kidney suet pudding, outstanding, It will not be two long before we return.

Excellent selection of traditional favorites, attentive staff, decent variety on wine list. So many cheese and dessert options to choose from. Meal was very tasty.

Restaurant was quite accommodating in moving up the time of my reservation.

Located amidst lively block in Covent Garden.

    We would dine here again.

I love Rules! Very authentic British restaurant with great food and decent service. I especially love the bacon and artichoke tart for a starter. If I have missed breakfast, I have the salmon with eggs for a starter; I love eating eggs at night! The rabbit is divine and the lamb looked very good, also. I wasn't crazy about the Venison Stroganoff dish. Even though it was served in a nice sauce, I found the meat a bit tough. My colleagues stated that their sirloin steak was cooked perfectly and another said that the Steak and Kidney pie was one of the best that he has tasted. Also, the specialty drinks are great with "A Kiss For Lillie" being my favorite!

Generally good. Food well presented, tasted good. Service not rushed but timely. Waiter somewhat dour and gave incorrect advice wrt one desert but very concerned lest we had nut allergy. Chipped glass changed immediately. On the basis of this lunch probably not particularly good value for money.
