London’s oldest restaurant, Rules has provided the capital with traditional British food since 1798. Timelessly elegant, its illustrious history has seen the likes of Charles Dickens and H.G Wells sample the hearty menu.

As authentic as ever, the Rules menu is led by wild game and classic British dishes. Whole roast grouse and loin of venison highlight the rich variety of meats on offer, topped off by rabbit hotpot, and wild boar and mushroom pie. Dishes don’t come much more British than the rump of Lake District lamb with haggis bubble and squeak, or steamed steak and kidney suet pudding, whilst the likes of pheasant curry with basmati rice, and Loch Duart salmon with mussels and garam masala, add exotic touches to authentic cuisine.

Historic prints adorning the walls, the extravagance of the restaurant’s décor led poet John Betjeman to describe it as ‘unique and irreplaceable, and part of literary and theatrical London.’ Upstairs, the Rules cocktail bar with its glamorous menu and plush red seating, epitomises the old-fashioned elegance of the entire building.

In contrast to the bustle of neighbouring Covent Garden, the age-old sophistication of Rules restaurant London is a 6-minute walk from both Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations.

Wonderful restaurant - inc the food, cocktails, wine, decor, service and overall atmosphere - and well up to its usual high standard on this visit.

Rules claims to be the oldest restaurant in London and it probably is. Certainly it goes back to the 18th century. It is a bit of the “old style” dining scene with wood panelled walls and old posters on the walls. Game is the speciality, but in the Spring old favourites like steak and kidney pie and Dover sole serve very well. I had quail as a starter and haunch of venison as a main. My friends, the sole. All well prepared. Service is Continental and attentive without being intrusive. Large wine list with plenty of affordable bottles. Treat yourself.

Wonderful experience, both from the culinary and the luxury points of view. When Wellington and Napoleon were fighting in Waterloo the restaurant was already well established. Luxurious, the ultimate British interior, full of history and an unique experience of English culinary, which is not...well...so highly rated worldwide. Notwithstanding this, the dishes are simply wonderful and very tasteful and the choice of wines very good.
Prices are to the level of the restaurant, so it is suggested for romantic or important business occasions.

Wonderful ambience and service. Potted shrimp weak. Lamb over cooked terribly. Duck cooked perfectly

Fantastic food, service and atmosphere. Especially loved the history and art deco decor. Had been wanting to visit for a while and it did not disappoint. Perfect for a once in a while luxury three course meal.

Myself and my wife went to Rules for my Birthday and our 42nd wedding Anniversary, it was one of the best dining experiences we’ve had very good food and attentive staff who were there when you wanted them but not over the top.
