London’s oldest restaurant, Rules has provided the capital with traditional British food since 1798. Timelessly elegant, its illustrious history has seen the likes of Charles Dickens and H.G Wells sample the hearty menu.

As authentic as ever, the Rules menu is led by wild game and classic British dishes. Whole roast grouse and loin of venison highlight the rich variety of meats on offer, topped off by rabbit hotpot, and wild boar and mushroom pie. Dishes don’t come much more British than the rump of Lake District lamb with haggis bubble and squeak, or steamed steak and kidney suet pudding, whilst the likes of pheasant curry with basmati rice, and Loch Duart salmon with mussels and garam masala, add exotic touches to authentic cuisine.

Historic prints adorning the walls, the extravagance of the restaurant’s décor led poet John Betjeman to describe it as ‘unique and irreplaceable, and part of literary and theatrical London.’ Upstairs, the Rules cocktail bar with its glamorous menu and plush red seating, epitomises the old-fashioned elegance of the entire building.

In contrast to the bustle of neighbouring Covent Garden, the age-old sophistication of Rules restaurant London is a 6-minute walk from both Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations.

Traditional, comfortable, excellent food and attentive service. We had a great time at this historic but very "today" restaurant for lovers of fine food.

This is a top-notch Restaurant, I had the heirloom tomato salad to start, which was absolutely lovely, and went totally traditional, sharing the prime rib for two with all the accompaniments, all excellent & there was enough left over for at least one more person. I would have loved to try dessert but just couldn’t!

Great welcome, very helpful. Food was delicious and much appreciated by my German guests who both tried English dishes.

Rules has a long and rich history abandon provides an excellent ambiance for the dining experience.

I have dined many times at Rules, but it is usually over a year between visits. Compared to past visits, I found the amount of wild game dishes offered has diminished.

On this visit I had the venison stroganoff. It was “okay” but not of the quality I experienced with other dishes in past visits.

We had been to Rules 4 years ago and had a wonderful experience, so this time we invited another couple to join us when we were in London. What a mistake! Service was very rushed, shoving our menus at us and asking for our order before we had even chosen our wine... I ordered a pork dish which I literally couldn't even get a knife through. Inedible. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to make a scene with our guests, who were also less than thrilled with the service and meal. Such a shame when there were so many other fine restaurants we could have chosen.

Very welcoming, lovely atmosphere and we loved the decor with all pictures and history. We all enjoyed the food we chose to eat. The fish dishes were delicious, beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were helpful and friendly. We hope to return!
