Restaurant Gasten & Galionen is located in one of Nyhavn's best-preserved houses, No 23.
It was home to the composer Friedrich Kuhlau, who before his death at 46 became immortalised for his musical score for the 19th century comedy Elverhøj. Kuhlau lived in the house in 1832, but its history goes back further than that - it is thought to have been built around 1620, and was originally used primarily as a residential dwelling, but according to the sign above the door it was a guest house by the year 1803. That it remains to this day, focusing on quality food served in comfortable surroundings, in the middle of the historic Nyhavn area.
