As ever, the food was excellent, the restaurant is attractive and comfortable and the staff are friendly. Service on this occasion was a bit slow, but it's usually good.

There was a group of 8 of us and our second visit here as a group. We all enjoyed the meals we ordered but 2 of the pies - chicken and mushroom were not hot enough. That is our only little gripe. The waitress was most helpful and even went to the trouble of giving us individual bills - a first for all of us.

My 93 year-old mother treated me, my 96 year-old aunt and my cousin to a super lunch here. So much good about this restaurant. It’s a nice, spacious room with, oh joy, a carpet covering a large part of the floor, excellent for muffling sound, meaning that this is one of the very few places you can take people with hearing problems to eat nowadays, when all the fashion is for bare floorboards, bare wooden, marble or metal tables, bare, unupholstered chairs and blinds instead of curtains at the windows (other restaurants PLEASE take note!). The staff were delightful and very attentive. The menu was on the hearty side and the portions were enormous, so although my tagliatelle with prawns was delicious I had to leave half of it, as did my mother with her (very good) calves liver and pancetta. I was particularly impressed by the dessert menu which Is a breath of fresh air; instead of the usual Great Five to be found in most gastropubs (chocolate brownie, cheese cake, creme brûlée, panna cotta and sticky toffee pudding), there was a number of tempting and original ideas. I ordered Pink Grapefruit posset with Gin Sorbet and Poppy seed Tuile and it was as delicious as it sounds. I’d love the menu to offer more than one salad (there’s a chicken Caesar which I’ll try next time) and reduce the portions a little, if only to prevent waste of such wonderful food. Otherwise it was all great!
