The Refectory Kitchen & Terrace sits within the Grade II-listed Principal York Hotel which dates back to 1878. Adjacent to York station and just a short stroll from the historic York city centre, the restaurant sources the very best seasonal ingredients, with an emphasis on local Yorkshire produce.
Restaurant favourites include short rib mac ‘n’ Swaledale cheese, shepherd's pie with 12-hour braised lamb shoulder, R&J Butchers game burger with red cabbage and beetroot slaw, and a selection of steaks, also from R&J Butchers. Finish your meal with a sweet treat – a modern take on the Yorkshire Parkin is the restaurant’s signature dessert.
On Sundays, the Refectory Kitchen & Terrace serves up a traditional roast with meat from R&J Family Butchers. The chefs also create weekly specials, so you’ll find something new every week. The modern, light-flooded dining room was created in partnership with leading London restaurateur Des McDonald, with further seating available on the outdoor terrace in warmer weather.
With York Racecourse just 10 minutes away by car, the Refectory Kitchen & Terrace serves brunch from 11am – 1pm on race days, with live music in the next door Chapter House bar.

Absolutely terrible and would not recommend. The a la Carte was not a la Carte. Paper sheets, screwed up or written on. Enquired about celiacs before purchasing, staff said it’s fine they cater. Lady went to chef who with a pen crossed out pretty much everything on the menu. Ended up having the prawn starter and an aubergine starter. Both cold. 5 prawns and some lettuce was £9. Absolutely ridiculous. Partner ordered sirloin as he felt bad I couldn’t have a 3 course meal. £26 and it was tough and not nice. We did tell the waitress several times but she was foreign and just said oh ok. What a waste of money. Bought the £50 a la Carte voucher in preparation and was expecting fine dining not pick some random stuff off a paper menu. Would not recommend at all.

I am really disappointed to say that we did not have a good experience at the refectory. The service was awful- nobody asked us if we wanted any more drinks after our first, we were not asked how our food was, menus were just pushed in front of our faces for dessert, and plates cleared when we were not finished! Also the waiting staff were clearly not trained well enough due to not knowing any beers on the menu. The room where we ate was freezing and I told the waiting staff more than 3 occasions and was told the manager would be over to talk to us but that never happened. To help you understand the plants in the bar were waving due to the draft blowing through! The food however was lovely and the chef should be praised.

Lunch was ok, not as good as on previous visits.....perhaps this was because I was a solo diner on this occasion?....water glass was warm, just taken from the dishwasher.....steak was well done as opposed to medium.....starter was finished before drinks were served.....only towards the end of the meal was I asked if everything was ok.....so all in all not a brilliant experience this time.

Very nice three course lunch which was a birthday gift from family. Really nice roast, just a wee comment that we would have liked the cauliflower and broccoli cooked a little more - gigantic Yorkshire puds.

Lovely food and very tasty and fresh, we asked for a variation of the draft in the menu and it arrived. Friendly and helpful staff. The room was a little cold

We dined here for two nights. The first night we all ordered starters and fish and chips. My starter was few rolled pieces greasy aubergine, with pine nuts and uninteresting leaves. No dressing....£7.50. Our fish and chips not great, kno flavour, had to wait for one meal yo be revoked as it had been dropped in the floor. The chips had seen better days, over cooked and soggy. The second evening was a different story, lovely food, enjoyed by us all. Breakfasts were excellent. Afternoon tea served with reluctance by a nonsmoking couldn’t be bothered waitress.

The food was ok. Service was good the staff look after you but don’t pester you. Restaurant has a good atmosphere. But it was expensive for what it was.

I was in Yorkshire with my parents. We chose to meet my godfather for dinner at this restaurant as he lives in York, but doesn't like driving in the dark. It seemed an obvious and convenient place to go. Sadly the service was poor. The food took a very long time to arrive and may have taken even longer had I not gone and spoken to the gentleman I took to be the manager. After that, it magically appeared in less than five minutes. The food was disappointing when it did arrive, particularly the fish ordered by my parents. There was no flavour. I'm afraid that I cannot give a rating to the service or value as both were so poor. We felt that such an attractive hotel was let down by it's restaurant. We will not be returning.
