Restaurant description

The Refectory Kitchen & Terrace sits within the Grade II-listed Principal York Hotel which dates back to 1878. Adjacent to York station and just a short stroll from the historic York city centre, the restaurant sources the very best seasonal ingredients, with an emphasis on local Yorkshire produce.

Restaurant favourites include short rib mac ‘n’ Swaledale cheese, shepherd's pie with 12-hour braised lamb shoulder, R&J Butchers game burger with red cabbage and beetroot slaw, and a selection of steaks, also from R&J Butchers. Finish your meal with a sweet treat – a modern take on the Yorkshire Parkin is the restaurant’s signature dessert.

On Sundays, the Refectory Kitchen & Terrace serves up a traditional roast with meat from R&J Family Butchers. The chefs also create weekly specials, so you’ll find something new every week. The modern, light-flooded dining room was created in partnership with leading London restaurateur Des McDonald, with further seating available on the outdoor terrace in warmer weather.

With York Racecourse just 10 minutes away by car, the Refectory Kitchen & Terrace serves brunch from 11am – 1pm on race days, with live music in the next door Chapter House bar.

Our booking was a present from family - we were excited to be able to eat out again after lockdown. The Hotel, The Principal, is gorgeous and the Refectory Kitchen is lovely, modern space. The downside was that it was too hot and uncomfortable to eat around midday as the ceiling is glass and the blinds were not used. I am sorry to say that the food was not well presented and at the first course my partner found a piece of wet blue kitchen roll in his Ceaser Salad. We aske the staff what it was. We were offered apologies and a complimentary drink but as our meal was pre-paid for this was of no use. It was off-putting, to say the least, to be told that the blue cloth in his salad had previously been used to clean the kitchen surfaces. My partner is a major-organ transplantee and has to be very careful about bacterial infections. My partner's main course, a pasta dish with chilli was not wel presented or unusual in any way. A bit like a canteen meal. My main course, a beef dish was better. The pressed beef was delicious, but there was a strange mix of soggy cabbage and cress that was not nice. The roast potato and yorkshire pudding were hard and crusty. I know its difficult to serve roasts fresh but it was very disappointing. The staff were lovely and helpful but unless the food improves and the air con is used or the ceiling blinds drawn I would not return or recommend the Refectory Kitchen, at York Prinicipa Hotel to anyone. I am sorry to be negative about our experience.

Warm welcome, friendly service. Salmon starter very good, my curry just right on spicing. Chose the right place for birthday meal for my husband. Only downside slightly chilly but in time of Covid felt airy.

Our visit to The Refectory was a Christmas present from one of our sons as we are frequent visitors to York. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. The food was lovely and the staff were very attentive. We went on Saturday lunchtime and the only thing I would have liked was to have a little more choice on the menu.

Good service. Beautiful food, favourite dish was starter of parmesan and pesto flatbread. Portion size of salad could of been slightly larger. It was a party members birthday and we were brought over a desert with a candle and staff were very attentive. Many thanks it was a lovely meal.
