Restaurant description

Close to Trafalgar Square, one of London’s most famous landmarks, the Princess of Wales serves wholesome British dishes in a cosy traditional pub setting. The pub is named after George IV’s secret first wife, Maria Fitzherbert – the marriage was declared illegal by the then Prince Regent’s father as George would have been ineligible to reign with a Catholic wife.

Since Nicholson’s pubs were first established in 1873, these traditional British inns have become synonymous with warm hospitality, hearty pub food and a speciality range of ales. As well as always featuring British pub classics like beer-battered fish & chips and gammon & eggs, the Princess Of Wales menu is complemented by a rotating selection of pie, sausage & chop and fish specials for each season.

The Princess Of Wales bar is always stocked with exquisite gins, warming whiskies and fine wines to pair with favourite meals, and there’s always a superb range of seasonal and regional real ales on offer. A constant at the bar is the St Austell-brewed Nicholson’s Pale Ale, made with Cornish Maris Otter malts, and a hand-picked blend of English hops.

Princess of Wales in Charing Cross is under a minute’s walk from Charing Cross Rail Station, and 2 minutes from Embankment Tube Station. Victoria Embankment Gardens are just a 5-minute walk away.

We visited the pub on Villiers several times during our visit to London. The meals were excellent and the service in the upstairs dining room was very welcoming and efficient. The staff was very accommodating and made us want to return. Loved the steak pie!

Excellent. Nice to find a place that was easy to get a table before our carol concert. Fast efficient service from a great waiter. Comfortable restaurant with nice beer. Only quibble for us was to find the credit card machine asking us for a gratuity when a 12.5% service change had already been added to the bill. One or the other please as it caused us great embarrassment

Excellent service. Waiting staff couldn't have been more friendly or efficient. Food and drinks also excellent. Will certainly visit again when in the area. Really helpful being able to book in advance on line.
