Restaurant description

A grand gastropub on the outskirts of Manchester, Pointing Dog The Original serves modern dishes and an extensive drinks menu in a setting that blends contemporary design with quintessentially British comfort. Settle back in front of the inviting hearth and crackling wood burner, or sit up at the bar with its galvanised light fittings for a craft beer or classic cocktail.

The Pointing Dog menu offers a great selection of traditional British pub favourites with gourmet makeovers, as well as crowd-pleasing recipes from all over the world. 28-day aged steaks are served with triple-cooked chips and truffle butter, while the lamb shoulder shepherd's pie comes with Butler's Mature Cheddar mash. For those after a lighter meal, there are rustic baguettes, while generous Sunday roasts are a popular draw at the weekend.

Classic afternoon teas are also served at Pointing Dog The Original in Stockport, with optional glasses of sparkling. The bar also serves up an extensive wine, and all kinds of craft beers.

A popular gastropub for all-day dining through to casual drinks, Pointing Dog The Original is a 4-minute drive from Cheadle Hulme Rail Station.

Service was slower than normal, not an issue, and understand as staffing has to be kept at a minimum due to restrictions in numbers now allowed.

Adult food was good (roast & steak), kids meals were too small (pizza) for an 8 & 7 year old - more like toddler size portions. Considering the size of the venue the tables were very close together (we were literally back to back with the next table) which felt uncomfortable in the current circumstances. Bar / waiting staff all had masks under their chins (stood chatting) or just covering their mouth with nose out. I had to ask our waitress to put her mask on properly. Service was very slow and dirty plates / glasses not removed even when fresh drinks arrived. Manager was excellent at dealing with a couple of food issues we had with my husband's steak (cold, no sauce) Then they gave us the wrong bill (our bill but with items on we hadn’t had). Under normal circumstances I would recommend as the food (when right) is lovely, however, the lack of proper mask wearing and closeness of tables was an issue for us.

Took my parents to lunch at the pointing dog on Saturday 10th October at the recommendation of a friend. Lunch was lovely, staff were very pleasant, food was great. All the social distance requirements were met. will definitely go back there.

Our first meal out since March. We were made most welcome and the staff were well trained with regard to social distancing. The pizzas were tasty, as was the chocolate brownie. Dropped one star on food as one pizza was missing some chorizo.

Food was nice & setting was lovely. One of our meals was wrong but the waiter who took our order was very apologetic so that was not an issue and it was nice that he was so concerned about rectifying the situation. Unfortunately, there was one other waiter who was very rude to me at points and that dimmed the experience for me.

The steak was really poor. We both had it but it was tough, grisly, not enjoyable and didn’t eat it. Told staff who made no effort to change it or offer and alternative. Also, the cheese board is so overpriced for four tiny bits of cheese.
