Restaurant description

A charming rural pub nestled in the scenic village of Chew Magna and bordered by Somerset's picturesque countryside, The Pelican Inn serves a delicious selection of gourmet British and international recipes. Inside the quaint bar and dining room, find rustic exposed brick and cosy log fires, making it an ideal destination for colder months, while outside there is a lovely suntrap seating area and vast garden to enjoy a cask ale or glass of wine in warm weather.

The Pelican Inn menu offers up a seasonal selection of both classic pub grub, and more modern international recipes, including gluten-free options. To start, there are snacks like classic sausage roll with apple sauce, as well as rustic treats like the chefs' soup of the day with homemade bread and Netherland Farm butter. A selection of pub classics include juicy steaks and burgers, as well as Butcombe beer battered fish and chips, with a range of more modern recipes featuring options like Devon crab with chilli, lime, coriander, coconut milk and pappadella.

Local cask ales from Butcombe Brewery and world beers are on tap at The Pelican Inn in Bristol, as well as a selection of international wines, cocktails and spirits. For pudding, tuck into classics like treacle tart with clotted cream, and mini chocolate brownies with a cup of Clifton coffee or tea.

In the summertime, pair a Butcombe pint with cheesy wood-fired pizza which is served for eat-in or take-away. A snug pub filled with rustic charm near Mendips area of natural beauty, The Pelican Inn is a 20-minute drive outside of central Bristol.

A really lovely venue, homely and warm, and great for families and dogs. The food was excellent - my husband (an incredibly hard-to-please foodie) said the lamb he went for was the best meal he'd ever had at a pub. Service was friendly, if a touch slow (from the sounds of things, they were on the look out for staff members so a fairly high quality problem to have), but it made for a really relaxed pre-christmas lunch. We'll be back.

Food cooked very well and pleasant service. Prices good considering the quality of the food. Really enjoy the range of choice on the menus. Wine list well priced. Beware, starters can be large!! Despite an adjacent car park with some spaces reserved for the pub, parking can be difficult even on a mid week lunchtime.

We called in for lunch on the way to the airport. Great service, lovely waitresses. The door was delicious. We had ham hock terrine and the cured salmon to start, followed by pork loin and the salmon form the specials board. The food was hot and wonderfully tasty. Just the right size portions for lunchtime. Excellent experience and highly recommend!

Food delicious BUT service appalling. We had booked for three adults and two children and had to wait forg an hour and twenty minutes before our food came and even then one dish was brought out at a time forcing us to wait even longer until everyone was served! This also happened at the next table to us. There was no real apology and we left very disappointed by a pub that we had been visiting for many years.
