We have been for a Festive Afternoon tea at the Lanesborough, as part of our family tradition to go for it at the top London hotels every year before Christmas. However this year the Festive Afternoon Tea was neither English nor too festive, we were left disappointed by various aspects of the experience, which I will detail below: - the biggest disappointment for us was the fact that the tea was from TEABAG !! I mean it was good (albeit from a very limited selection), but I don’t expect at this level of luxury to drink from a teabag that I can buy in any shop, that’s a no-no for me - there are NO sandwiches – this is in the very fibre of the “afternoon tea” in England, without them its not a proper one. Instead there are a few “savouries” which to be honest are pretty bland and we were left unimpressed by them, to the point that we declined the offer to replenish - The whole hotel doesn’t feel too festive and in the restaurant itself there is NO symbol of Christmas anywhere to be seen, we could have been any evening of the year. Yes, there are some festive songs played on the piano, but its done in-between other normal songs. It doesn’t make you feel you do it for Christmas - the manicure of at least one of the waitresses could have been better, especially when you see this when they serve you. - there is no “Christmas cake” or mince pie or anything traditional Christmas English - you cannot replenish the sweets There were positives, such as the fact that the sweets were absolutely delicious and that we got extra scones, but its not enough for such a highly-regarded hotel and for the price we paid to have the Festive Afternoon Tea experience, which is by far the worse of all the top London hotels we have tried so far. We cannot recommend it, because we were left a bit deflated after all the hype of going to “The Lanesborough” and to be honest it wasn’t value for money at all. We would definitively not come back and I would advise anyone else to avoid it, unless i

Very nice atmosphere, excellent service but the price-value ratio is unfortunately off. We feel just too expensive. We believe you can have an excellent afternoon tea at much lower prices in similar nice settings. The staff was very kind and always available.

The pastries can be described as average if not poor. For sure not what you would expect from a place sold as one of the best afternoon tea experiences in London. The ambience seems traditional but a bit outdated. The gratuity of 20% is automatically added to the bill, which is very uncomfortable, since it leaves little room for you to give what you think is fair for the service.

We were a group of 6 and we had a most wonderful time. The ambience, food and service were outstanding. Raffella, our hostess was absolutely excellent and could not have been more accommodating. I had not considered the Lanesborough before for afternoon tea, but I am absolutely delighted that I did. I will definitely be returning!
