The pinnacle of Italian dining in Glasgow for over 45 years, O Sole Mio proudly offers an authentic taste of Naples, with a traditional wood-burning brick oven, hand-stretched pizzas, and warm Mediterranean ambience.

As Scotland’s first restaurant to utilise a traditional wood-burning oven in 1965, O Sole Mio takes great pride in its range of pizzas. An eclectic antipasti selection includes sharing platters of Italian cured meats, as well as bold flavours in the grilled tiger prawns with lemon and chilli dressing. Fresh pasta on the O Sole Mio menu includes superb vegetarian gnocchi, with all pasta available al dente if requested.

Carefully selected Italian bottles feature on the wine list at O Sole Mio Glasgow, which are perfect to enjoy in the colourful, intimate setting of the restaurant. The open kitchen creates a real buzz, while contemporary artwork adorns the walls.

O Sole Mio restaurant sits in the city centre, 10 minutes’ walk from Glasgow Queen Street Rail Station.

The front door opens directly onto Bath Street, with full height glass windows giving a great view of passers-by, and wheelchair access. The restaurant was very busy throughout our stay, so it’s clearly wise to book ahead if you can. It seats 60. The space was recently refurbished, and feels contemporary, with dark, attractive wood tones and beautifully lighting, a long cocktail bar, open kitchen and new and very comfy booths at the front and sides. There is unobtrusive background music, some Italian, some pop.

The present host and proprietor Djamel Benouari met us at the door and was extremely gracious and observant throughout. Our various servers were a mix of Italian and Glaswegian, all highly competent and very friendly.

The attractive wine menu tours the world and includes 4 whites, 4 red and 2 rosés by the glass. My wife began with a Bellini, and I had a glass of unoaked Australian chardonnay, which was terrific. From the antipasti/starters I ordered Calamari Fritti, polenta-crusted and served on a green salad bed with garlic mayo. The flavours were all lovely, though the squid was a little bit rubbery.

For mains we ordered Risotto con Funghi Selvatici e Pollo (chicken risotto with wild mushrooms and truffle oil) and Beef Stroganoff, served with rice. This was very, very fine cooking: the meats were perfectly finished, moist and melt-in-the-mouth, the mushroom flavours singing out even though the mushrooms were button, not wild, both rices exactly al dente. My wife finished with a dessert of Tiramisu, which was fine if not distinctive, while I drank a small glass of Pino Grigio Bianco.

This was exactly what you want from a pre-theatre or evening meal in the city. The atmosphere was tremendous, lots of happy customers and conversation, smooth yet precise service. The quality of the cooking was very high, the prices weren’t high at all, and the little hiccup of slightly over-cooked calamari doesn’t stop me from awarding 5 stars.

Despite arriving early for our lunch my friend and I were seated immediately at our table. Our waitress advised your best beer and we each had an enjoyable pint. Starter and main course were excellent and my companion commented it was just big enough for lunch without leaving us stuffed. We had a thoroughly enjoyable meal at a very reasonable price. The staff could not have been more attentive.

This was my first lunch since having dinner there several years ago which was ok but nothing to write home about. However, I have to say that lunch on Wednesday was in a different class. I could not find fault with anything. The menu offered a wide choice for both the starters and main courses. I had minestrone which I find difficult to pass by followed by the chicken. Both were excellent in quality and quanty. In addition, the service provided by the young staff was first class. To sum up, I don't think it will be years before I cross the threshold again.

Lovely little place in the city centre. The oregano and garlic bread is the best I’ve had and the aracini is to die for. Would highly recommend this place to anyone.
