Restaurant description

Boasting a stunning 92-foot high location at the top of the National Portrait Gallery, the National Portrait Restaurant delivers modern European cuisine. Simple yet elegant presentation mirrors the beauty of the National Portrait Gallery beneath, and the panoramic London vista outside.

Served on level 3 of the National Portrait Gallery, The Portrait Restaurant menu features seasonally evolving dishes using produces from local suppliers. A la carte options feature grilled bream fillet with potted shrimp butter, spelt risotto with lemon mascarpone, and chargrilled Hereford rib eye beef with hand-cut chips, béarnaise and watercress.

Afternoon tea is a colourful menagerie of inventive creations. Pistachio éclair with praline grains and salt beef and sweet mustard sandwiches can be enjoyed with hand-roasted coffee or loose leaf teas. An extensive selection of New World and French wines can be enjoyed whilst taking in the breath-taking London skyline from the Portrait Bar.

With views stretching from Trafalgar Square to the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the London Eye, The National Portrait Gallery is a 3-minute walk from Leicester Square Station.

Really nice relaxed place to meet in the very heart of the city. Service was exceptional with very friendly staff who added to the relaxed atmosphere. Good choice of food, though competent wasn't spectacular. Good wine choice if a little on the pricey side for anything half decent.

Exceptional maitre d’ looked after us superbly and the Afternoon Tea was delicious and contemporary ... NOT same old same old but a revelation.

Consistently high quality of the menu and of the service. I would not want to change the ambience, the waiting, the range of dishes offered, or the wine list. Lunch is always excellent and the whole experience is friendly and relaxed.

I took an another American to Tea there for the ambiance, view, and tea. The tea itself was delicious. The sandwiches were a bit dry—it's hard to keep them fresh, I know. There were too many little cakes. I would have preferred to choose a few fresh ones rather than too many slightly stale ones... Our server was neither particularly attentive, nor careful—dismissive might be a better word. There was a very talkative and obviously Important and Wealthy 4-some there and there was considerable hovering around them. We had to ask for water 3 times, and it was given somewhat begrudgingly. I still love going there, but I was disappointed at our treatment and the quality of what we were served for the price. It seemed we'd run into a little "snobbishness" at the hands of the not British server showing off against the Americans, or maybe he was just weary at the end of his day.

Already responded to survey request by NPG. Our afternoon tea was fantastic value and would even ave been so if we hadn't had the special offer through Bookatable. It was a fabulous place, with fabulous food and drink, and very welcoming friendly staff providing s with a great table. Will definitely return for another yummy afternoon tea. The little fresh seared tuna /quail egg mini starter was a star turn and very welcomed. Beautiful views across the rooftops of London.
