Good food and service
12 August 2017
Mr Cooper's offers a multitude of different dining settings under one roof, combining modern touches with the history and heritage of Mr Cooper himself, whose house and famous gardens sat on the site back in 1819. Trees, birdhouses and a gazebo decorate the striking dining room which, with a zesty-green and white colour scheme, ushers the outdoors in.
The restaurant serves daring elegant food, cooked with flair and imagination. Seasonal dishes include starters of pressed smoked Ham hock with crispy pig's cheek, egg and bacon, followed by Cumbrian lamb rump with scorched turnips, cracked wheat and lamb jus. For dessert caramel popcorn tart with roasted rye ice cream and soured cream perfectly compliments the season.
Delivering world class service, the award-winning bar is known for its use of avant-garde ingredients and techniques including drinks made using a Rotary Evaporator. Lounge in the lush garden, sip on a cocktail in the library, or cosy up in the study’s leather booths with a fabulous drinks list boasting a wide range of spirits, beers and juices. Mr Cooper's Bar has been shortlisted for Imbibe's 'Drinks List of the Year 2016' and also listed in Condé Nast Traveller 'The Gold Standard 2015'.
Listed in The Good Food Guide 2017, Mr Cooper’s House & Garden at the Midland Hotel in Manchester is a 7-minute walk from Manchester Oxford Road Rail Station.

Excellent meal, enjoyed all aspects from the cocktails to start with, the good attentive service (but not too much) and most importantly the food was great.

Absolutely delicious. Service impeccable, atmosphere just right. My 17 year old son loved it also.

Absolutely appalling service. Me and my partner booked time off work to stay at the Midland and have our meal at Mr Coopers so we were ready for a beautiful meal. The table service was rubbish it was an hour before we got our main course and by that point your just angry. My steak was tough and felt like it had been sat there for ages surprisingly and my partners burger looked like something from Macdonalds which he would of preferred over that tasteless burger.

Having experienced Simon Rogan's eating establishments before and had excellent experiences, I was looking forward to trying Mr Coopers for the first time with two lady friends.
I had booked a table well in advance and we arrived early in order to have pre-dinner cocktails.
We were shown to our table, which disappointingly was situated right next to the reception desk and telephone, so for us the ambiance was not so good.
We ordered our meal at 8.15pm and were informed that there might be a slight delay with our starter and would we like bread to keep us going.
Bread arrived quickly, but our starters did not appear until almost 9pm.
We queried this and were told that it had been quiet until 8pm, so staff had been sent home, however an unexpected large party had arrived. There did however appear to be quite a number of front of house staff around, but not much food coming from the kitchen.
The starters were good and lived up to our expectations.
By 9.40pm our main course had not arrived. We had finished our wine and were beginning to get concerned as one of our party had to leave at 10.15 to catch a train.
Again we were told 2 minutes. The main courses arrived and generally were good, although one of the fish dishes had potatoes which were clearly undercooked, possibly because the chef was rushing to get the food to us.
We ate quickly and ordered our desert and bill straight away. Our desert arrived at 10.05pm, giving us just enough time to eat and pay.
We received an apology from one of the staff, who took a round of drinks and the service charge off the bill as compensation for the unacceptable delays, which was appreciated.
Overall, however, this was a disappointing experience and there are a couple of points I would like to make.
Firstly, having booked well in advance, we were disappointed with the location of the table.
Secondly, had we just walked off the street without booking in advance, we might have accepted some delay in service.

A few extremes in this review...
Starting with the highs
They accommodated us at very short notice having turned up an hour later than our original reservation.
The quality of the food was very good, especially for the price paid. I had the Hereford rib eye and it was well cooked and tasty. The portions were marginally on the small side, especially the lamb that my wife ordered.
The major downside was the length of time it took to be served. Starters arrived all ok and within a reasonable length of time however it was then around 1 hour later before our mains turned up. We were told that it was because there were 2 big tables being served ahead of us but on a Saturday night in August you would've thought that a kitchen should be able to cope...
As a result of the delay we skipped dessert as it was getting too late in the evening.
Overall the food was good but the wait was very off putting and I don't know if we would visit again.

The decor is the same grand looking one. The service is always as great. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FOOD? Any other hotel food menu. boring and not good. I ordered a ribeye steak. when the plate comes out WET with meat juice and when the outside is too wet, when it is overcooked, it is just really bad. A steak is not easy to cook - but when you pay good money and expect a good steak and this comes out: NO. This was definitely the last time I had food there. What happened? I did not complain as I was on a date and I felt really bad for the waiters. It was shocking. What happened to your menu? It really upset me.

Very nice place - nice bar area for pre dinner drink. Good atmosphere and excellent service. Food was very well presented and nice flavours. Seemed busy but not manic - plenty of staff waiting on. The waitress who served us in the bar didn'tseem to know the ingredients of certain cocktails but may be she was new! All in all a good dining experience

The best trout i have ever tasted. Complimented by delicious lovage sauce. Staff were lovely. I adore this restaurant also unbelievable price. If you have not tried Mr Coopers yet then you must. I love to drink Brandy and Lovage but unfortunately they do not stock this in their bar. Please consider stocking lovage in your bar to compliment your Brandy. I will be back. Thank you to your excellent Chef for such amazing food.
