Restaurant description

A charming modern independent bistro, Milkwood champions traditional and contemporary Welsh cuisine. With a simple colour scheme of dark leathers, polished woods and white walls, this is a casual, inviting setting to enjoy tastes of the local area.

The Milkwood menu focuses on Welsh recipes, but with bold, inventive tweaks. Start off with fresh seafood flavours, with the smoked eel salad with nasturtium and horseradish, moving on to spring lamb cutlets with salsa and aubergine. Game delicacies include the spiced quail with hummus, and there are vegetarian options such as homemade tagliatelle with summer truffle.

A selection of dessert wines at Milkwood in Cardiff are perfect to round off a meal, or indulge in one of the puddings, with choices including rhubarb with buttermilk junket and fennel granite. There is also a polished wine list to choose from, with bottles from around Europe.

Milkwood is a cosy space to enjoy modern Welsh recipes, and sits a stone's throw from the green open spaces of Portcanna Fields. Ninian Park Rail Station is a 6-minute drive away.

Very welcoming and friendly service. Small menu (good because all freshly cooked) - all the dishes we had were excellent. Favourite was the baked cod which three of our party ordered. Only criticism was that portions were a bit too big for a restaurant of this quality.

We had a lovely evening at Milkwood. The food was amazing, especially the handmade pasta and the custard tart. The service was also great. Very much recommend.

An excellent experience from beginning to end. The scallop starter was superb and only surpassed by the rabbit pappardelle pasta dish. We had a beautiful house Sauvignon Blanc by the glass, which we still use as a guide to a good restaurant, and splashed out on a Vacqueras red which was fabulous. The service was first class and very professional, attentive but not over fussy (well done staff). We found the food great value for money.

We had been wanting to take friends from North Wales to Milkwood for a long time and finally managed it last Friday night. Overall it was a good experience as it usually is but... Our staters were very good as was the cod main and the desserts but the Carmarthen lamb chops which were described as rare were virtually inedible and needed to be cooked more. I know that teh prevailing view on Masterchef is that red meat should be pink inside but these were just not cooked enough. Apart from that, the experience was good and we will return and have the cod next time.

We visited Milkwood to celebrate my friends 50th birthday, The ambience was good and the food was excellent. Everyone said that their food was of exceptional quality. I had a tortellini with pecorino and a sage and butter sauce which was delicious and a polenta orange cake and ice cream. You couldn't fault anything.

3 diners. Starters & mains were exceptional. Greater choice of deserts would finished off an excellent meal. Last minute booking and what a find it was. Will definitely be back next time in Cardiff.
