Restaurant description

A charming modern independent bistro, Milkwood champions traditional and contemporary Welsh cuisine. With a simple colour scheme of dark leathers, polished woods and white walls, this is a casual, inviting setting to enjoy tastes of the local area.

The Milkwood menu focuses on Welsh recipes, but with bold, inventive tweaks. Start off with fresh seafood flavours, with the smoked eel salad with nasturtium and horseradish, moving on to spring lamb cutlets with salsa and aubergine. Game delicacies include the spiced quail with hummus, and there are vegetarian options such as homemade tagliatelle with summer truffle.

A selection of dessert wines at Milkwood in Cardiff are perfect to round off a meal, or indulge in one of the puddings, with choices including rhubarb with buttermilk junket and fennel granite. There is also a polished wine list to choose from, with bottles from around Europe.

Milkwood is a cosy space to enjoy modern Welsh recipes, and sits a stone's throw from the green open spaces of Portcanna Fields. Ninian Park Rail Station is a 6-minute drive away.

Fabulous food. I usually have the veggie option when I dine out. The food was unusual but very tasty, beautifully presented and lovely and hot. Will visit again

Milkwood is an amazing neighbourhood restaurant in the uber-trendy Cardiff suburb of Pontcanna. Ate lunch with a work colleague and felt this was much elevated from the normal lunch fare - to the point of being truly outstanding. The somewhat pretentious sounding ‘plat du jour’ ?? is good value when considering the quality of the dishes - £15 for 2 courses (£17 with a glass of wine) or 3 course for £19 (£21 with wine). I had the salt baked beetroot, orange, yoghurt, tarragon and hazelnut which was superlative and really tickled the taste buds. My colleague had the Tuscan fennel and wild boar salami, celeriac remoulade & sourdough toast was reported as equally superb. For main course I chose the Cornish cod, heritage tomatoes, green sauce and tender-stem broccoli and my colleague had the Butternut squash, ricotta and chestnut tartlet. Both of which were visually gorgeous and tasted equally good. We passed on the dessert (it’s lunchtime!) of which there was only one choice (just as well!). It’s very quiet at lunchtime in Milkwood but packed to the rafters in the evenings and booking is then essential. If you have the time - lunch is the lovely, quiet option. A fabulous find for someone like me who is new to Cardiff.

This was our first time at Milkwood and it most definitely wont be our last. We had a fabulous evening in this cozy restaurant with a lovely warm atmosphere served excellent food by a very friendly/attentive waiter Honestly one of the nicest meals we’ve experienced in Cardiff and we cannot wait to visit again.

I really liked the restaurant - a nice bright and unfussy area, it was relatively busy for a small room and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The staff were friendly and informative about the menu and wine selection. The food was delicious and given the quality of the ingredients and the generous portion sizes for the main courses I thought very reasonably priced. The crab toast that went with my John Dory starter was just heavenly !

I hadn’t been to the restaurant for several months. It was very busy and only two waiting staff so service was slow. Food generally good and portion sizes seem to have increased since my last visit. My main course of chicken was delicious but my starter of red mullet in a bisque was very nice but the bisque was too salty. One of the party had the pork chop with Polenta. It wasn’t enjoyed as the chop was overcooked and polenta very oily due to being cooked with lardon.

We were impressed with the choice of starters and mains. Thoroughly enjoyed the red mullet starter and the trout main. Staff welcoming and friendly.

We’d visited Milkwood once before and had a good experience which compelled us to return for my husband’s birthday. Sadly we didn’t have a very good experience. Starters took over 40 minutes to arrive which was fine as we weren’t in a rush. After 40 mins I asked where they were as other tables arriving after us had finished theirs. The main (pork with lardo polenta and kale) was a huge disappointment. Not only was the meat uncooked (pink on the bone in most parts, it was chewy and largely inedible. I spent most of the night worrying I would get ill from eating undercooked meat. When paying £18 for a main you expect better. I mentioned to the waitress just to get a lukewarm response and a mumbled muffled apology. She didn’t know how to deal with such situations and panicked. We waited forever for our dessert which wasn’t really worth the wait. When the bill came the waitress explained that she had taken 50% off my main which was a fair enough attempt to put things right. Next issue, the card machine wasn’t working (they could have told us on arrival). My husband went to get cash from nearby and paid £70 in cash. The bill came to £64. Due to our experience we weren’t planning on leaving a tip, something we normally always do, providing the service is up to scratch. However not at any point did either waitress bring the change over and just assumed that this was their tip. Not wanting to make a fuss we left, disappointed and frustrated that we more or less ended up paying in full for a very underwhelming meal. I really want to believe this was a one-off due to it being short-staffed perhaps. We won’t be rushing back unfortunately.
