The afternoon tea was ok. We were greeted with a glass of prosecco. The sandwiches were freshly made but the cakes were so dry, like they had been made a day or two before. The waitress who was looking after us was lovely and friendly.

Housed in a converted Georgian townhouse, Merchants serves up the very best in local and seasonal fine dining. Enjoy a set lunch or afternoon tea menu, or in the evening, 5, 7 and 9-course tasting menus, with an additional vegan tasting menu option.

Offering a journey through unique and intriguing flavour combinations, the Merchants menus are inspired and shaped by the life of head chef Like Holland. Dishes include 'BBQ with the Boys' a dish of aged beef, mustard and charcoal and 'Grandpa's Greenhouse' - a dessert of green pea, mint and white chocolate.

A stunning setting for imaginative fine dining in Nottingham, Merchants Restaurant is an 8-minute walk from Nottingham Rail Station.

Booked for afternoon tea, distinctly underwhelming experience - uninspiring sandwiches and cakes, scones not great, only offered one pot of breakfast tea or a coffee, no choices offered, no refills offered. Shame because it's a really lovely setting.
For £20 a head need to offer something more than bog standard sliced bread with a few boring fillings and one pot of tea. Left feeling disappointed and embarrassed that my treat for 2 friends was so lacklustre.

Disappointed that we were not in the main restaurant. Felt rushed. Not happy that service charge was added when there were only 2 of us.

I believed The Lace Market Hotel to be one of the best in Nottingham and so booked a festive afternoon tea for myself and 4 friends from work as a farewell due to early retirement. Unfortunately the experience was very disappointing.
    1. We were the only party in the bar area but it was deemed appropriate to have someone working on the next table, furiously tapping away on a laptop surrounded by files. Surely a more appropriate space, even one of the hotel rooms could have been found.
    2. The girl who delivered the teas/coffee stumbled leaving a puddle of coffee in a saucer and when I pointed this out, the girl explained it was because she stumbled not, ‘yes, sorry, I’ll get another one’ .
    3. I was also disappointed with the crockery service the afternoon tea was served up on - I was expecting more fine bone China or at least something more contemporary.
    4. The sandwiches/scones/cakes were all fine.
    5. As is tradition with afternoon tea, there were some left overs which are ususlly presented back in individual boxes for each guest to take home. Ours were stuffed into two plastic containers, where one had a lid that didn’t fit.

All in all, a disappointing exoerience for me as the organiser and bill payer.

Very friendly - very well presented. Very nice food (compact menu - which as usual, means that everything is good!)
If I was going to be picky... I would rather not deconstruct Banoffee Pie - its better left constructed.

Booking the table was very easy as I was able to do this online. I also got a reminder the day before about the booking. From entering the restaurant to leaving the staff were very friendly and professional. The restaurant is very bright and immaculately clean and fresh. We had the lunch time menu which was excellent value for money. Three courses for £19. There were about four choices for each course. The portions aren’t big but they aren’t so small that you leave hungry. I had two courses and I was full. All of the food was tasty and well presented. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will definitely be going back.

Nice bar and my cocktail was lovely
Don't think my table expected the size of the mains to be that small especially if you have decided to have two courses
Lacked atmosphere (there were only two other tables eating in the restaurant besides us) especially for a Friday night

Booked a table in the Merchants Restaurant on line, of the options offered I chose the a la carts menu, this was confirmed by e-mail, including my choice of the a la carte menu, on arrival was informed that the a la carte menu was not available at lunch time, due to the limited choice on your lunch menu I gave my guest lunch in the bar which we enjoyed very especially the service from the gentleman on duty, this went some way in lessoning my disappointment over the lack of a la carte.
