South-East London plays host to Magdalen, a restaurant devoted to the best of British cuisine. Once a Peruvian restaurant, it looks like it should have been an old pub; burgundy walls, glossy floorboards and quirky chandeliers create a unique atmosphere once you're inside. The food is charmingly old-fashioned with a contemporary twist; fish stew with gurnard, scallops and mussels, venison trotter pie and smoked haddock with choucroute are typical of the bold, earthy flavours to encounter. The wine list leans towards France for its inspiration, but other countries feature as well. All of the main courses consist of hearty, flavourful cuisine at very reasonable prices.

Dined here on Friday night.. Found the ambience very nice and would say mostly suited to couples or small groups as atmosphere restrained and refined.. Service was frendly but professional ..food was excellent .. Would recomend the cured beef starter which sounded simple, but was a real treat.. Followed this with the hare with polenta, which was probably the best I've ever eaten while my wife extolled the virtues of the roast brill.. Only small criticism was that the food came up very quickly with the main course following the starters within 10 minutes.. Good mainly french wine list. Will definitely be returning.
