Lovely food and excellent service
08 April 2019
Just a stone’s throw from the town’s world-famous cathedral, La Tasca Durham offers a colourful range of Spanish flavours. In the cosy, low-ceilinged dining room, dine surrounded by wood panels and ornate Mediterranean-style tiling.
Since the first La Tasca restaurant opened in 1993, the menu has won a string of awards, and stays committed to showcasing the finest available ingredients and bold, natural flavours. Headed by the signature tapas range, choose from a range of colourful paellas, tender slow-cooked meats and sharing platters piled high with artisan meats, cheeses and breads. Sweet creations include Spanish-style gelato, and sharing churros with gooey chocolate sauce.
Complementing the food offerings, the La Tasca drinks list is filled with fine Spanish wines, summery fruit-filled sangrias and traditional sherries. A favourite with families, La Tasca in Durham also offers a range of miniature tapas especially for children.
A family-friendly hideaway, La Tasca restaurant is 10 minutes’ walk from Durham Train Station.

I love this restaurant. Have been going for years. Never a bad meal. It's a shame that it is closing, my family and I are gutted.

We arrived a little earlier than our 6:30pm reservation but nevertheless were seated almost immediately. Our server Mila was outstanding, she gave us time to choose our tapas (just as well because there was sooo much choice that even my 11yo and picky 13yo found lots to like!) and clearly explained any menu queries. The atmosphere was good but a little noisy for regular conversation across the table.
We started with some lovely (albeit small) garlic bread to nibble on whilst our tapas was prepared and didn't have long to wait for our meals. The tasty pork ribs lived up to the menu description of falling off the bone and were a good portion size with a lovely glaze. The chicken wings were nice and sticky and the flavour was ok but nothing remarkable. The pork cheeks were tender and the glaze delicious but I was a little disappointed with the small (3 piece) portion size (4 would-be been better). The lamb empanadas were actually beef empanadas because the chef had been having issues getting hold of lamb. However, this didn’t detract from the dish in any way – lovely and crispy with delicate flavours and tender beef. Goat’s cheese croquettes were served a little cooler than I would’ve liked but they were very delightfully creamy in texture, the same was true for the texture of chicken croquettes but unfortunately there wasn’t a huge amount of chicken content.
For dessert we got 2 plates of churros mess to share between four of us – a sinfully rich chocolatey plate full of churros, ice cream, marshmallow, strawberries and cream. Omg it was delicious! A great end to a great night ??

Second visit and it was excellent as before. 4 of us had 12 dishes, all of which were delicious, (except for the pig's cheek which was beutifully tender meat, but in what we thought was an overly sweet sauce.
Can't fault the service or setting. We will go again. ( We had the two for the price of one Tapas deal, which made it even more delightful)

Everything about La Tasca is good. The service is prompt and the servers are always friendly. The food is delicious, never let down by it. A great atmosphere without being too loud like other places can be.

Waitress was lovely and very pleasant although service was slow. Only one waitress who was rushed off her feet. Our dessert was awefulbtobthe point of not being palatable but she very kindly deducted this from the bill. Everything else we had was lovely
