Terrific. All dishes delicious. Steak, chicken trout. ( son would have liked pepper sauce in steak but u produced Bernaise which was fIne. La Belle cocktail would be better named Paddington favourite as so delicious and marmaladey.

A hidden gem surrounded by the shops and theatres of Covent Garden, Joe Allen is a highly regarded restaurant serving a selection of American and European specialities.

Ideally located for a pre-theatre meal or for dinner after the show, Joe Allen is quietly tucked away on Exeter Street just a five-minute walk away from Covent Garden underground station. Nearby theatres include The Lyceum, Novello Theatre and Duchess Theatre, as well as the Fortune Theatre and Theatre Royal. Joe Allen is also a great destination for a special brunch, lunch or dinner when shopping or staying in one of the hotels around Covent Garden and on the Strand.

Opened in 1977 as a stylish London dining venue for theatre-goers, artists, journalists and performers alike, Joe Allen has a relaxed, casual feel throughout. Today the healthy cuisine and friendly atmosphere attract an eclectic clientele of the West End's young and trendy crowd, romantic couples and families.

Joe Allen has faithfully recreated its old decor and ambience in its new location. Service was good and attentive, noise levels intolerable and food distinctly average: crispy squid as a starter was OK, but the house special baby back ribs came smothered in an artificial tasting and over sweet sauce. Prices are high for what it offers £48 each, with no desserts and one of the four of us not drinking.drinking

We've been visiting Joe Allen's since January 1997 when we were treated to a limousine ride up there on a snowy wintry night and their wonderful a la carte menu. I was heavily pregnant with our seventh child at the time and it was such a treat.
I fell in love with the cosy ambience, the candles, the mis-matched chairs, the theatre posters, the super charming staff and the food!
It's been a favourite ever since and when in town, if we can fit a visit in we do.
Of course Joe Allen's has moved from its former home in Exeter Street but don't panic, it's retained everything that was so lovely about the old one and even more curiously, despite the new showy red awning, still feels somewhat dark, mysterious and hidden.
We came most recently to celebrate Fathers Day without the children, unconventional but infinitely cheaper than a table for eleven.
We chose to eat at about 5pm as we were going to a concert at 7pm. We were able to make our choices from the set three course menu and both chose a shredded duck starter and the steak frites.
The shredded duck was served on a quartered tortilla and dressed in plum sauce, with chopped cucumber, spring onions and red chilliest and plenty of aplomb. It was divine and we slowed right down for this one savouring every sublime mouthful.
The steak frites was served unashamedly naked apart from a whisper of little salad leaves. Nowhere to hide with this one. Sheer heaven was achieved by adding just a little Dijon mustard to the steak and a twist or two of salt and pepper to the perfectly crisp frites. Ooh la la!
Father had the lemon tart with raspberry coulis which he said was very good and I had the goats cheese with artisan crackers. The crackers were crisp and thin and the cheese was perfectly soft and not too cold.
All this was washed down with
a bottle of their Sicilian house white which was as agreeablle as the price at £17.95
And then the bill, which with a special Fathers Day discount was very reasonable.

it was nice to have lunch in the "new" Joe Allens
I knew the old place well and apart from being a short distance from the old place and indeed on the ground floor instead of the basement it was just like the place I knew and liked
2 of us had a starter then steak frites the third had a huge rack a ribs

a nice bottle of house red was imbibed to wash the lunch down

Bill was inexpensive and the ambience was good service good and we weren't rushed out the door when we finished

if you like good wholesome and simple american style food put Joe Allens on yer list

    well done

As always Joe Allen does not disappoint. This is my fifth visit but the first at their new premises. More space but still hasn’t lost that charm from the old place. Excellent service and fabulous food. Will keep going back every time in London. One of the top favs.

We've been using Joe Allens since it opened and it never fails to be a nice experience. The new location maintains the atmosphere and the calves liver is back on the menu! We took friends who were there for the first time and they were happy.
