Restaurant description

A hidden gem surrounded by the shops and theatres of Covent Garden, Joe Allen is a highly regarded restaurant serving a selection of American and European specialities.

Ideally located for a pre-theatre meal or for dinner after the show, nearby theatres include The Lyceum, Novello Theatre and Duchess Theatre, as well as the Fortune Theatre and Theatre Royal. Joe Allen is also a great destination for a special brunch, lunch or dinner when shopping or staying in one of the hotels around Covent Garden and on the Strand.

Opened in 1977 as a stylish London dining venue for theatre-goers, artists, journalists and performers alike, Joe Allen has a relaxed, casual feel throughout. Today the healthy cuisine and friendly atmosphere attract an eclectic clientele of the West End's young and trendy crowd, romantic couples and families.

Great location for accessibility to West End theatres and Covent Garden. Lovely theatre/jazzy ambience with photos of stars all over the walls and a pianist. Friendly and attentive staff provide excellent service. Perfect for pre or post theatre dining, food while good is perhaps not a reason alone for going. Menu appears to have shrunk unfortunately and my beloved lobster bisque, one of the best I have ever eaten, has disapeared. A great shame.

A great lunch with friends. Ambience as good as ever. I loved the seared tuna starter, and pearl couscous salad. Friends had crispy squid and the cheese and bacon croquettes to start, then chicken Milanese and the hot dog, both really enjoyed them.

This was our second visit to Joe Allen's and again we were disappointed. Joe Allen's is a friendly restaurant the walls are packed with vintage theatre show adverts along with photos of celebrities. The staff were really friendly and the food was superb. The restaurant cane get busy especially early evening as they offer pre-show dining so I would recommend booking a table, this can be done really easily on-line and saves disappointment.

I loved the decor and location, but I was disappointed with both the service and the food. Reviews I had read were very positive so perhaps I was expecting too much. There appeared to be too many staff most of whom didn't seem to know what they were doing and they were being ordered around by a senior member of staff very openly which made me feel uncomfortable. I would assume that there were several very new members of staff on duty all together-unless this is the usual level of service???? Our waiting staff didn't speak clearly to us and neither I nor my 20 year old daughter understood what they were asking us on more than 1 occasion (despite both the waiting staff and ourselves apparently having English as a first language-they just mumbled quietly!) We were served our staters before we had even ordered (clearly a mistake). Our main course sailed passed us and made its way around the restaurant before making its way back to our table. All in all poor service. My starter -tempura vegetables was good, but I was very disappointed with the signature Fishcake dish-the spinach was very vinegary and the fishcake too salty. N thing I would send back, but very disappointing for one of your signature dishes. I think the ambience would have been lovely if not for the serving shambles and ordering around of staff going on.
