Restaurant description

A hidden gem surrounded by the shops and theatres of Covent Garden, Joe Allen is a highly regarded restaurant serving a selection of American and European specialities.

Ideally located for a pre-theatre meal or for dinner after the show, nearby theatres include The Lyceum, Novello Theatre and Duchess Theatre, as well as the Fortune Theatre and Theatre Royal. Joe Allen is also a great destination for a special brunch, lunch or dinner when shopping or staying in one of the hotels around Covent Garden and on the Strand.

Opened in 1977 as a stylish London dining venue for theatre-goers, artists, journalists and performers alike, Joe Allen has a relaxed, casual feel throughout. Today the healthy cuisine and friendly atmosphere attract an eclectic clientele of the West End's young and trendy crowd, romantic couples and families.

As always a lovely meal. I would also particularly like to commend the service which was excellent... especially a lovely lady who was on the desk ( with glasses). Just one point ...we arrived at 12.30 ... so an early lunch ...and had booked in good time. We were shown to a table fairly near reception . The area was empty for a long time eg about half an hour, so lacked atmosphere. Everyone else who came in were shown to the other areas. Why was that? We felt a bit left out. I am quite a regular .... in fact have been coming since I was in my early twenties (40 years ago). My guest who was visiting for the first time remarked that they must be the ‘in crowd’. In my last two visits (relatively recently) we sat in the main areas.

This was my second visit and I loved it. The staff were friendly and very efficient in an unobtrusive way. The food was good, but mostly its such an interesting place to be with a great buzz.

This is our favorite pre theatre restaurant in London and we were not disappointed in our recent visit. Service is efficient, professional but not rushed. The pre theatre menu is a excellent bargain and the food continues to impress. The new location has the feel of the old one, which is also a plus. We will return.
