Restaurant description

A hidden gem surrounded by the shops and theatres of Covent Garden, Joe Allen is a highly regarded restaurant serving a selection of American and European specialities.

Ideally located for a pre-theatre meal or for dinner after the show, nearby theatres include The Lyceum, Novello Theatre and Duchess Theatre, as well as the Fortune Theatre and Theatre Royal. Joe Allen is also a great destination for a special brunch, lunch or dinner when shopping or staying in one of the hotels around Covent Garden and on the Strand.

Opened in 1977 as a stylish London dining venue for theatre-goers, artists, journalists and performers alike, Joe Allen has a relaxed, casual feel throughout. Today the healthy cuisine and friendly atmosphere attract an eclectic clientele of the West End's young and trendy crowd, romantic couples and families.

We dined early evening as a pre theatre meal. Used Groupon voucher for excellent meal albeit limited. Would have considered dining even without the voucher. Have dined here previously and Joe Allen's has been around almost as long as my husband has!!

I dined at Joe Allen's on a weekday at 9:30 and the atmosphere was electric. The venue is fantastic: it is based in a great location and the interior decor is fun and nostalgic. I have been to Joe Allen's previously and received good service. However, on this occasion the waitress was rude and patronising. Despite this, I love the food and ambiance of the restaurant, so that particularly experience would certainly not put me off going again! It is still one of my favourite London restaurants!

Nifty booking service. Staff all very affable and efficient without being obsequious. Ambience makes one feel wickedly metropolitan. Food was not exceptional, however.

We last visited Joe Allen in the early 80's and thought it would be great to go back. Unfortunately we didnt recognise anything I am not sure why as everything is practically the same so they say. I think it was the ambience it was cold, bleek no background music. We did go early (6pm) so that may of been the trouble.(and it was raining!) The service was very good but lacked the personal touch. Food ordered, food serviced, plates cleared! The meal was ordered from the special menu and although looked very apertising on the menu, when it arrived it was all very clinical looking. We went to [...] across the road last time so we think we will go there again! There was nothing that would draw us back to try Joe Allens again unfortunately.

I had my doubts before I entered but these were unfounded. The dinge door and back street location are hiding a gem. Our pre-theatre dinner was great, and restaurant was pleasantly busy but not packed, with a good atmosphere. The selection was good and our choices were serve promptly , we didn't feel rushed. Some wine a little pricey , so watch what you order and check glass/carafe. All the food was great, swordfish was delicious. Definately come again

Hate to say it but I was disappointed with Joe Allens. We booked the pre-dinner menu for [$] which included two courses. The service was appalling - our waitress was unwelcoming and didn't smile at all. The food lacked any kind of wow factor and the portions were small. We would have been better off grabbing a pizza.
