A hidden gem surrounded by the shops and theatres of Covent Garden, Joe Allen is a highly regarded restaurant serving a selection of American and European specialities.
Ideally located for a pre-theatre meal or for dinner after the show, Joe Allen is quietly tucked away on Exeter Street just a five-minute walk away from Covent Garden underground station. Nearby theatres include The Lyceum, Novello Theatre and Duchess Theatre, as well as the Fortune Theatre and Theatre Royal. Joe Allen is also a great destination for a special brunch, lunch or dinner when shopping or staying in one of the hotels around Covent Garden and on the Strand.
Opened in 1977 as a stylish London dining venue for theatre-goers, artists, journalists and performers alike, Joe Allen has a relaxed, casual feel throughout. Today the healthy cuisine and friendly atmosphere attract an eclectic clientele of the West End's young and trendy crowd, romantic couples and families.

Comfortable and relaxing atmosphere with a nice buzz and good choices on the menu

The new venue has been made to look very much like the old one, so the New York-redolent atmosphere remains the same. The pianist playing when we went was excellent, not jaded, he really added to the evening. The food is not ambitious but it is tasty and affordable. There are some affordable wines on the list as well as overpriced wines but the cocktails are good value. Service was fine and quite enthusiastic. So overall we were glad we went. It really has not changed much from how it was when we used to go when Joe Allen first opened 40 years ago, except that it is no longer trendy. A

Let me say, we have no complaint about the quality of the food - we all enjoyed it. However, the experience was marred by the poor table-service we received. Instances:
The wine waiter forgot which wine I ordered and came back later to me for a reminder
We ordered two spinach's; one came with the dishes, one came midway through eating
All condiments were dumped on the table in a haphazard manner. Not placed near the diner who asked for them.
At coffee-time, the empty wine/water glasses were not cleared, leaving the table cluttered.
The male waiter was reasonably attentive. The female waiter had an attitude of not wanting to be there.
I really don't like complaining, but because we have had such good-times at Joe Allen over many years, but I feel I should on this occasion. I guess that occupancy was about 70%, so your staff were not under great pressure.
Lastly, four sets of crockery were dropped with resounding crashes during our meal.

This was my first time in your new premises which is really great. It has maintained the same ambience as the previous JA’s. However I was very disappointed in my calves liver which was tough to say the least. I’ve always had this dish on previous visits during the past 30 years and have always enjoyed it. Also I’m usually asked how well done I would like it cooked, but not last night.

Friendly staff but not great service. Cocktails and drinks took a long time. Wasn't the live music experience we were expecting.

Better than previous visits but still not back to the old Joe Allen standards. Service was brisk on this Thursday lunch time and food and drinks arrived promptly. Our bread basket (with our bread in it) was removed when the mains arrived, why? Our puddings were clearly microwaved for too long making my partner's brownie too hot and my bread pudding strangely bouncy, and way too hot. We were overcharged, as we ordered 2 courses from the Set Menu and were charged for 3 which I didn't notice until I had arrived home and looked at the bill. So all in all not great Joe Allen - you need to do better.

First time visit to new JA's - Excellent service - excellent food - I'll be back....Oh yes - I'll tell friends too.... First came to JA's in the early 70's....

I prefer the old place as the rooms were smaller and there was a more cosy feeling. I go to JA for burgers and I must admit I thought the fries were not as good as they used to me. I had booked a table for 2 and we were seated by the entrance. The space between the tables is not big and one can easily listen to the conversations around.

Comfortable and relaxed, buzzy restaurant with soft lighting, quick, friendly and efficient service with a good range of comfort foods and more creative dishes. I personally like its 'speak-easy' feel and great live pianist. As far as dishes are concerned, I've now been a half dozen times and never had something I don't like.

First visit to Joe Allen in its new home & certainly didn’t disappoint. Great food, excellent atmosphere, really good drinks. Service a little haphazard in a couple of areas but didn’t detract from our overall experience. Very enjoyable.
