Restaurant description

Drawing on flavours and culinary traditions from Asia, the Middle East, East Africa and Britain, Jikoni was described by Yotam Ottolenghi as the restaurant “he wished he had opened” in 2018’s Where Chefs Eat guide.

The Jikoni menu changes with the seasons, with regularly changing dishes including the likes of clove-smoked venison samosas with beetroot chutney and charred Brussels sprouts with hot and sour dressing. Meanwhile, signature dishes include the banana cake with miso butterscotch and Ovaltine kulfi.

Around half of Jikoni’s menu is always vegetarian. Much of Jikoni’s produce, wines and even teas are sourced from artisan and sustainable family producers and locally in the UK where possible. Colourful block print textiles sit beside Indian paintings on the wall, creating a vibrant, homely setting.

Jikoni is nestled into the heart of London’s Marylebone neighbourhood, just a 5-minute walk from both Selfridges and Baker Street.

We chose the early evening menu (£34.50 a head) which included 3 courses and a cocktail. The restaurant is very pleasant with background music and nice lighting, it has a good atmosphere. The staff were also lovely, we were greeted, seated and given information on the various offerings. The cocktail unfortunately arrived after the first course was served but it was delicious, as were the three courses. There was very limited choice; 2 starters, 3 main, one of which had a supplement, and 2 puddings, however we both found something that we fancied and enjoyed. My husband found his starter a bit too spicy (a sort of Scottish egg) but my crispy rice one was spicy but not too hot. The chicken dish was very tasty and puddings very nice. So excellent value for London and a very enjoyable meal.

My main course, a baked cod dish, arrived with the cod nearly raw and the accompanying vegetables were cold.

The lunch menu was limited but that was s good thing as we could try s variety of dishes all together the waiter was helpful in explaining what each dish contained so we could have an informed choice. Good Champagne by the glass in coupe glssses was a great idea
