Winning Best Midlands Restaurant at the 2012 British Curry Awards and the Best UK Restaurant at the Cobra Good Curry Awards in 2007, Itihaas is a pioneering Indian restaurant in Birmingham. Split between luxurious Colonial and Maharaja Suites, the restaurant offers opulent cuisine inspired by the Moghul era.

With a name that literally translates to ‘history’, Itihaas focusses on Indian heritage with a menu ranging from marinated lamb shank, cooked in Indian army rum masala, to Goan prawn curry. A whole lobster is simmered with 5-spice in a creamed mustard paste, while an impressive vegetarian selection includes chickpea, paneer, aubergine and lentil recipes.

Blending Indian and western influence, desserts at the Itihaas restaurant in Birmingham delight with chocolate and coconut samosas, and naan bread and butter pudding. Slate walls and plate glass line the restaurant interior, evoking a sophisticated colonial ambience.

Looking out onto the Birmingham Canal, Itihaas sits in the Jewellery Quarter on Fleet Street.

The table was booked for a surpise birthday at 8, I came with the birthday boy a lot later due to the fact that the table wasn’t ready, I had to then change my plan and surpise him in he lobby 40-50 minutes after the table was booked!! Once we got downstairs we had to wait long gaps to be seen by the waiters, when I get to get his cake there were 2 rude foreign women who wouldn’t give me the cake the way I wanted it as I wanted to bring it in not them and rudely told me to go downstairs I decided to ask staff downstairs myself and the 2 men were really helpful and friendly! Overall I wouldn’t come back.

Starters a bit disappointing- very salty, and very expensive for what they were. Mains were better - lovely paneer- but again, really expensive. Service was excellent and venue lovely.
