Bringing ground-breaking northern Chinese cuisine to one of London's most famous buildings, Hutong is housed on the 33rd floor of The Shard. From the sultry dining room at this restaurant in The Shard, floor-to-ceiling windows frame jaw-dropping views of the city. Enjoy creations inspired by dishes from the imperial palaces of Peking.

Inspired by its famous namesake restaurant in Hong Kong, the Hutong menu features favourite northern Chinese recipes served with contemporary flair. Head Chef and Sifu ('master' in traditional Chinese culture), Fei Wang, showcases his vast culinary experience honed across China and the UK. Enjoy acclaimed signature dishes at this Shard restaurant, like Chinese asparagus heart with hula dressing, and Red Star noodles: watch the waiter open a crown of red peppers to unveil a Sichuan broth with perfectly steamed halibut, rice noodles and gong vegetables. Hutong restaurant at The Shard in London also offers a delicately crafted selection of dim sum, and the menu's showstopper dish is Sichuan-style deep fried lobster, served with fresh red and green chillies, dried garlic and salted crispy black beans.

Offsetting its glittering glass façade, the Hutong dining room features traditional oriental décor, like smooth dark-wood panelling, and delicate patterned lanterns. Head to the glossy Shanghai Bar at The Shard for unrivalled views of the London skyline, and enjoy oriental-style cocktail mixes inspired by traditional Chinese medicine.

A spectacular addition to the London restaurant scene, Hutong restaurant at The Shard is found adjacent to London Bridge Tube and Train stations.

No reservations are taken for the bar, which operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The dress code is smart casual, and entry will not be allowed to those wearing shorts, sports kit, flip-flops or sports shoes.

A pretty poor start - I had booked a 4 course lunch deal for myself and my wife for her 50th birthday, and in the comments had said she needed gluten free food. I was rung by the restaurant the day before who examined me on whether this was a lifestyle choice or an allergy or how serious an allergy. I explained she has coeliac disease so can’t have any gluten. They didn’t say anything more. When we arrived at the restaurant it was clear the 4 course deal had almost no gluten free dishes on its set menu. The waiter told us that we couldn’t have the deal we had booked as it was for 2 people and as my wife would have to order from the a la carte menu neither of us could have it. We sent him back to try and sort this out and he came back again now saying that I could have the booked deal but my wife would have to pay the a la carte prices. We asked him to talk to the manager and finally he came back and said she could choose dishes from the a la carte menu at the price of the set deal. Not a welcoming start, and of course the bill then came with the cost of the a la carte dishes on it so had to be sent back. The meal itself was nice but really not worth the sky high prices, and certainly not the aggravation on what was a celebration lunch.

When we were ready to do the payment, the waiter in Hutong asked us where are you from. We replied China. Then the waiter muttered to himself “cina cina” but we heard that. That word is extremely an abusive calling for chinese. During World War II, Japanese used cina to insult Chinese. We cannot predict the waiter were meant to it or he has no idea whats the meaning behind the word. But it ruins our nights and moods at Hutong. It is a Chinese restaurant and we hope Hutong will respect Chinese Culture and had told our experience to their manager already. Please correct your services and pass on our dissatisfield to that waiter.

Rather disappointed with the food, very rushed service

When we arrived we were shown to a table with a lovely view of London, it was my son’s 18th birthday and he really enjoyed fantastic scenery. The wine list was extensive and modern. The service as relatively attentive and good, the sommelier was knowledgeable helpful, the food however was a disappointment. We had the set menu £75.00 per head which had their signature dish of soft shell crab. I love crab and it was tasty but flavour reminded me of some French fries I had at a burger bar. The food it certainly did not match the view, and was certainly not worth the price charged.

If this restaurant was at ground level I would have been even more disappointed. Initially we were rushed with our courses and the third course was cold. I complained nothing further was done! Finally the dessert was described as having a fruit salad. When I asked what the single berry was I was told that was the fruit salsa. My overall impression is that it was far too expensive for average food with service from inexperienced staff. There are many better places to go in London
