A short walk from Borough Market, Hixter Bankside is the latest venture from culinary trailblazer Mark Hix, offering simple yet scrumptious chicken and steak dishes. Formerly a metal box factory, this unique London restaurant presents specially commissioned artwork, as well as an atmospheric basement cocktail bar.

High-quality meat takes centre stage on the Hixter Bankside menu, with beef sourced from hand-selected cows and barn-reared chicken providing the basis for some classic dishes, including Glenarm mighty-marbled steak and Indian Rock chicken with stuffing and chips. Eton mess and mini chocolate cake are among the puddings on offer at Hixter in London.

Handcrafted cocktails are shaken up in the latest outpost of Hix’s achingly hip bar, along with Mark’s famous bar ‘Snax’. Accessories in the basement bar include salvaged cinema seats, and art installations from the likes of Tracey Emin, Tim Noble, Mat Collishaw and Gary Webb.

The largest of all Mark Hix restaurants to date, Hixter Bankside is minutes away from Borough, Southwark and London Bridge tube stations.

This was a return visit and the food was of its usual excellent standard. We had our old favourites of chicken liver pate with Yorkshire pudding followed by the chicken and chips and ended with the sharing salted caramel with marshmallows and doughnuts. We also enjoyed the ice-cream with the chocolate sauce. The staff were helpful and we did not feel at all rushed. A lovely evening.
