Once a metal box factory, 16 Great Guildford Street now plays host to Hixter Bankside - the little sister to Tramshed in Shoreditch, and successor to the hugely popular Hixter City. Paying homage to the original space, the design accentuates the natural features of floor-to-ceiling windows, metal and brickwork, while the walls are decked out with neons and hanging art by famous and up-and-coming British artists, including Mat Collishaw, Tracey Emin, Tim Noble and Gary Webb.

Follow the corridor down past Mark Hix's characteristic dining bar and through a neon archway to reach the main room: a bright and airy space defined by the natural light and the towering Himalayan salt-brick wall. Enjoy large hunks of meat designed for sharing, like roast chicken from Swainson House Farm in Lancashire, and mighty-marbled beef, aged in a Himalayan salt chamber in Glenarm Estate, Northern Ireland.

Downstairs, the basement plays host to the latest outpost of the award-winning Mark's Bar, with seasonal cocktails and classics galore.

    This was a return visit and the food was of its usual excellent standard. We had our old favourites of chicken liver pate with Yorkshire pudding followed by the chicken and chips and ended with the sharing salted caramel with marshmallows and doughnuts. We also enjoyed the ice-cream with the chocolate sauce. The staff were helpful and we did not feel at all rushed. A lovely evening.
