Tom Pemberton, formerly head chef of St. John Bread and Wine, uses the best nationally sourced seasonal produce, placing the provenance of meat, fish and vegetables at the heart of this endeavour. Happy to advise you on the daily changing menu, the friendly and knowledgeable staff can recommend a range of delicious meals such as Sea Trout, Samphire, Scottish Girolles and Native Berries in the summer. Later in the year, winter presents a number of different options that are just as delicious including Mutton, Game, Middle White Pork and Colchester Oysters. The food was very good but service was terrible. It took a long time for someone to even take a drinks and starter menu, the mains we ordered were out of stock and then we re ordered and it took 20 minutes for someone to come and tell us that the fish we had also ordered was out, so we had to change our orders again. Very unfriendly waitress

Dined at 7pm on a Friday night, restaurant was busy but still intimate. Food was, as always, fantastic.

Evening dinner with clients, was attracted by the menu and convenient for client location. Compact dining area nicely designed, but a bit snug. Interesting menu with focus on traditional ingredients, but a little hit and miss. I had duck liver and foie gras pate, which arrived already spread on my toast, which took away some of the pleasure of doing it myself, but was delicious nevertheless, then lamb which was also delicious but the side of anchovey, potato and cream was less successful. Eton mess for dessert was OK, but was a bit lacking in fruity zing to offset the meringue and cream. Service was pleasant, if a little hassled.
