Perched on Torquay harbourside, there are few more idyllic spots to enjoy dining than at Harbour Kitchen. A trio of restaurateurs at the helm boast a history working at various Michelin-starred restaurants.

Sourced from the local area, the food is exceedingly fresh, seasonally-changing and affordable. Everything on the Harbour Kitchen menu is exciting and has a contemporary twist: snack on lobster wontons or monkfish scampi, before getting started with a soft Scotch egg with gribiche sauce.

Follow starters with a lusciously tender flat iron steak with braised beef cheek, while hake with crab, samphire and cep cream gives a nod to the neighbouring ocean. Intricate and innovative desserts such as maple syrup crème brûlée with bacon and white chocolate cookie are sure to appeal.

Other perks include a tasting menu, Sunday lunch menu, and a substantial cocktail and wine list. Harbour Kitchen in Devon has an understated, fresh design with a touch of the nautical about it, and seating outside for those who choose to dine al fresco. Torquay Train Station is a 20-minute walk away.

Food was amazing, we like going to harbour kitchen quite regularly, we did felt a little rushed through ours meals, our starters came out before our drinks were even ready, I understand that because it was New Year’s Eve they wanted to move people in and out. The food was great and the services was good considering how busy the restaurant was.

On arrival, the restaurant was empty, but there was a lot of staff in attendance. The decor is pleasant and the nautical wall decorations made from copper tubing was novel. We had a window seat with a terrific view of the inner harbour, but as the evening wore on the downdraught from the large window made us wish we'd perhaps sat a little further in the restaurant. Service was on the positive side and although the staff were pleasant, it was a little disjointed overall. Just more experience needed I guess. The menu is compact, which always brings debate with diners, but I find that small restaurants should concentrate there best efforts on a limited but varied choice, so fine with me. The food unfortunately was unremarkable. Although obviously prepared with care and attention, it was with mixed reaction with some good and one particular poor point. The rosti was way, way over salted. A point that was pleasantly made to the waitress to pass onto the kitchen, which she duly did and the chef apparently agreed. Five of us dined, three with starters, two with dessert along with a bottle of Rioja (nice for the money) and a bottle of SB. The bill was £250. For the money and Michelin guide recommended, I would expect more in all honesty. It's difficult to recommend, which I am disappointed to say as I hoped I'd be able to but at £35 a head for two courses, I just can't.

Loved the views and the food. Between us we had mussels, scallop and prawn gratin and pork belly and scallop to start. We shared the Chateau Briand and my daughter had the beef cheek. We all tried each other's meals and loved them all. View was amazing from the table by the window. Fab experience.
