Nestled on the fringes of Dartmoor National Park, the Great Western at Bovey Castle epitomises tranquillity with its rural setting. Guests can enjoy classic British food in a relaxed dining room that recalls the allure of the restaurant’s Art Deco origins.

The Great Western menu features locally produced, exceptional food, all of which is beautifully presented. Scallops with an emulsion of cockles, clams and oyster are a spectacular starter while the roast suckling pig with confit turnip and spiced quince makes for a sumptuous main course. The impressive wine list at Bovey Castle near Newton Abbot is filled with meticulously sourced bottles.

A delectable array of desserts includes warm banana soufflé with corn ice cream and malt toffee sauce, and a creative chocolate tree stump with lime and cardamom.

Guests can pre-arrange transport to this fine dining restaurant in Devon with the hotel. Newton Abbot Train Station is a 40-minute drive from Bovey Castle.

Excellent restaurant great food good service from young European staff. Oxtail consommé soup with Cauliflower cream amuse bouche was a stand out in a 3 course meal which was actually 5 course as it included a lemon sorbet with lemon curd and meringue pre-dessert. The scallops/crab and lobster, Dover sole Veronique/Venison and blackberry soufflé (which we both had) were stunningly good on the Wednesday night but the Dover sole was not quite as good on the Friday (cool fish smaller portion).
Nevertheless both nights fully justified 3 AA rosettes and for £65 pp (+12.5% service) fantastic value. Wednesday’s meal was better than meals we have had in Michelin starred Restaurants. The candle lit restaurant is beautiful in an Edwardian opulent style enhanced by a pianist playing the grand piano on Friday (and Saturday) evenings. Definitely worth dressing up for.

Starters and desserts amazing. Main course wasn't great. loved all the little extras. Excellent service and atmosphere.
Confusion about payment. Staff assumed I was staying at the hotel and just asked for a signiture. I then had to pay later over the phone.

    Over priced

Best dessert I have ever eaten.
Mixed feelings about the tasting menu. Some great dishes (venison, amuse bouche), some not so great (blue cheese salad).
One of the most disappointing breakfasts ever. Definitely not 5 star.
Bacon was hard, staff abrupt and my husband gave up on his hash browns after waiting 1/2 hour.

Amazing Afternoon Tea, fantastic quality, all homemade food. Lots of variation and little bites which were so filling and we got to take some away with us, always good :).
The waitress was so helpful and explained what each individual item was and very attentive but not constantly which was nice.
The lounge area was lovely, with a fab view. Highly recommend as a treat! We had a brilliant afternoon, would love to come again.
