Nestled on the fringes of Dartmoor National Park, the Great Western at Bovey Castle epitomises tranquillity with its rural setting. Guests can enjoy classic British food in a relaxed dining room that recalls the allure of the restaurant’s Art Deco origins.

The Great Western menu features locally produced, exceptional food, all of which is beautifully presented. Scallops with an emulsion of cockles, clams and oyster are a spectacular starter while the roast suckling pig with confit turnip and spiced quince makes for a sumptuous main course. The impressive wine list at Bovey Castle near Newton Abbot is filled with meticulously sourced bottles.

A delectable array of desserts includes warm banana soufflé with corn ice cream and malt toffee sauce, and a creative chocolate tree stump with lime and cardamom.

Guests can pre-arrange transport to this fine dining restaurant in Devon with the hotel. Newton Abbot Train Station is a 40-minute drive from Bovey Castle.

Although we were seated quite late after our reservation time it just gave us the opportunity to have few more drink.at the piano bar.
We choose to have the " Tasting menu" and we were very happy with the our choice. It was delicious.
We were delighted with the quality of the service from their staff.
The 12.5% gratuities was a bit high and unexpected but they do deserve it!
I would happily recomend to friends and family.

Lovely afternoon, eating a delicious cream tea. Loved everything that was served from the fresh sandwiches, to the scones and assorted cakes and pastries. Such a lovely historic building. Very welcoming with excellent staff.

We had a wonderful evening for my partners 40th birthday. We enjoyed the vegetarian tasting menu accompanied with wine pairing. My partner was presented with a lovely chocolate written happy birthday with some delicious chocolates. We look forward to returning soon.

The entrance warm and welcoming. Staff in the oak bar attentive to drinks request, requested our dietary requirements. The food was amazing, the taste and the appearance of the food exemplary. The "extra" of a happy birthday signed in chocolate lovely, and much appreciated. Favourite dish? Hard to choose, maybe the wild mushroom ravioli, cooked to perfection.

Not the best laid out restaurant but not the worst but the food and staff are absolutely the best, and Gidliegh park for afternoon tea is rubbish compared to Bovey Castle,
Dinner at Bovey is an experience and one not to be missed.

I chose Bovey Castle for our afternoon tea because of the fantastic time I had there when I stayed with my husband last year. My friends have not been before and I wanted to take them somewhere which they would always remember fondly.
I could justify the price of £160, a price far higher than other venues I considered because of the location, the service we received on our last visit, the valet parking, someone to greet us when we arrived and the attentive service we received from all of the staff.
This time sadly when I arrived at the valet parking I was told to find a space myself. On entering the hotel there was no one on the door to greet us and tell us where to go, so instead we went into the main room and had had to find someone to ask. A member of staff did then direct us to a seat in the window. Sadly it was very cold and so we asked to move to a table near the fire. We were told this was ok but after sitting and making ourselves comfortable, we were then told a mistake had been made and that table was already reserved. We were then asked to move to another room, which was ok but not as impressive. We were however happy enough with our new location.
The service was ok but could have been better as we were left for a long period of time between seeing anyone to ask if we needed tea top ups.
I did leave feeling my friends probably found the afternoon overpriced as it didn’t have the ‘wow’ factor which I had promised, which is a shame. However, personally, I am still a huge fan of Bovey Castle but based more on my previous stay than on this visit.
Fingers crossed if I come again you can wow me once more!
