Inspired by Cumbria’s rich history as a centre of the spice trade, Gilpin Spice Windermere offers a menu which sees Cumbrian favourites joined by influences picked up along the spice trail all the way to Japan.
Starters on the Gilpin Spice menu include chilli maple-glazed Barbary duck flatbread from the wood-fired oven, and a hot and sour Thai tiger prawn soup. The rest of the menu is split into smaller and larger sharing plates, such as Saddleback pork belly with Chinese spices, chateaubriand steak with Asian-spiced barbecue sauce, and a classic chicken tikka curry.
Rich desserts at Gilpin Spice restaurant include chocolate brownie with star anise ice cream, and a black pepper and clove sorbet.
Amidst the stunning scenery of the Lake District, Gilpin Spice Cumbria is a 20-minute drive from Kendal Rail Station.

The restaurant is stunning with a lovely view of the gardens and the lakes if you are able to sit out on the veranda I am not quite sure what I was expecting when we went to eat it is all beautifully presented but It did not quite live up to what we thought and we did come away still feeling rather hungry .Its worth a try if only to see how the restaurant has been presented though I do wonder if one big room would have been better than two more off the main restaurant.

This was my second visit and it was as enjoyable as the first. I had recommended it to my friend and she also thought both the food and the surroundings were amazing. We shared 5 plates and my friend also had a dessert and the bill was very reasonable, well worth the journey from Carlisle especially on such a beautiful day.

My overall experience of The Gilpin was fantastic. We had the set menu and everything on the menu was to our liking, especially the lamb! All the waitresses and waiters where always attending to our needs and very welcoming! they are a credit to the Gilpin!

From the moment you arrive this is a truly wonderful experience!
As we had never been before staff explained how the menu worked, we have good appetites and portions were just right. Although on our next visit we would have probably have one less 2person sharing plate as 3 and a main each was too much for us.
Sitting watching the most unstressed Chefs was a delight and the attention to detail fantastic happy smiling friendly.
The ambience, decor, garden made this a very special place.
Not over priced good service.
Only one tiny thing the metal drinking cups looked good but really didn't like using them but that is a personal choice ...just asked for a glass!
We will return with our husbands next time!

Went for an anniversary dinner, it was fantastic! We had a vegetarian taster to share. Truly superb food. Ambiance and decor were lovely and service was excellent. I could not recommend highly enough.

Fabulous dining experience from the dramatic water and fire pit entrance through the décor and especially the food. Plenty of non alcoholic drink options on the menu. Everything we tried was delicious with exquisite subtle spicing. The Singapore fried Paneer , Pan Puri and the Barbary Duck were all memorable. Very attentive staff. My only slight down side was the service was a little too quick and dishes were starting to cool before you got round to eating them. I would probably stagger my ordering on a return visit which is a definite goal.

Gilpin Spice is set in beautiful surroundings and the restaurant is divided into different sections. The staff were very nice and as it was our first visit took time to explain the menu and advise on how / what to order. The food was amazing and the cocktails were gorgeous (Kashmir Fizz). Overall it was a wonderful dining experience.
