Inspired by Cumbria’s rich history as a centre of the spice trade, Gilpin Spice Windermere offers a menu which sees Cumbrian favourites joined by influences picked up along the spice trail all the way to Japan.
The Gilpin Spice menu is split into smaller and larger sharing plates, showcasing an eclectic range of flavours. From the open kitchen come tapas-style, pan-Asian dishes, with influences as diverse as the Philippines, the Indian sub-continent, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and China.
Amidst the stunning scenery of the Lake District, Gilpin Spice Cumbria is a 20-minute drive from Kendal Rail Station.

What a fabulous venue, it was a special occasion and it absolutely fitted the bill. The colours, the attention, the interesting and intriguing menu was great. We did find the early courses more pleasing than the main courses though. However we will definitely visit again and select with better knowledge.

Arrived about 15minutes early on the Mayday bank holiday Saturday. Although the table was ready we opted to sit outside and enjoy a drink whilst oerusing the menu. The weather was gorgeous and the surroundings are beautifully landscaped. A great relaxed start to the evening. After choosing our meals, we went inside to dine in the tastefully decorated main seating area. The other areas are just as well turned out, if not slightly more serene (they are away from the main open litchen area)
Our waiter(s) brought our wine and starters, and we tucked in to an equisite dining experience. The food is well cooked, the presentation is pretty (maybe taking heed from the michelin starred restaurant merely 30m across the forecourt garden - go try there too - brilliant), and the taste is truly brilliant, eastern/indian influenced fresh local (and some more unusual ) produce and the taste is really well thought out. 13 spice veggie curry is great/octopus beautiful, everything was delicious.
I can't begin to describe all the spices and flavours, but believe me, words can't do it justice. In my view , just go and take in this brilliant experience. Note you will have to book well in advance if it's a birthday/occasion treat, so plan ahead.

Great place to eat.
Impressive to walk up to from car park, lovely surroundings, nice place.
Excellent welcome, almost as if the maitre 'd knew who we were.
The decor is nice and the various rooms have a vibrant atmosphere.
We ate in the open restaurant/bar area and it was a great experience.
The service was impeccable, and food was really nice. The only gripe would be, that the food could be better explained as in the main restaurant (Hrishi), since once ordered the menus are removed. (perhaps I should have asked for one to peruse whilst eating, no doubt one would have been made available.)
Great food, great place, great atmosphere, and not over expensive, would , sorry will definitely be going again, soon.

Waiters attentive, atmosphere nice and food tasty. My only negative comment is the menu / tapas feel, it is quite hard to know how much food you need to order. Until you have been once and seen the individual portion sizes. The Waiters do advise you on how much they think you need, but everyone has different appetites.
